can i change named.conf 's port ?

hi there, i have a dedicated server with centOS, plesk 10.3.0 its named.conf (location - /etc/named.conf) is listning on UDP 53 port. now i want to use OpenVPN for UDP 53 port, but due to named daemon is using that port, OpenVPN is not working. i have a working site on that server already, so can i change named daemon's port from UDP 53 to other port like UDP 52 or UDP 54? will it be safe for my running site? and what should i do after changing ( like should i have to reboot whole server or only some service? ) pls tell with all commands as i am not so fast for server management yet.

Wah? named is your DNS server running.. if your server isnt replying to DNS then just turn named off? if you need to use your server as a DNS server then you CANNOT change the port as thats what it uses.

thanks lynxus for fast reply, but i have another question, will killing that process will effect my running site? as i told its a dedi, so my nameservers are like ns1.mysite.com , ns2.mysite.com and they are like ns1.mysite.com -> A record -> My IP. so is it safe to kill it , reguarding to site?

Not if you want to continue reaching your site. Killing it would make it harder for you to reach your site by domain, rather than IP.

so, finally i can not change it or kill it any other option to use UDP 53 port with my running site??

ok your problem is: Your website address example.com needs a DNS server so people can find you on the internet. Your DNS server is your own dedicated server. IE the server you run your site from is your DNS server. The DNS server is "named" and that MUST run on port 53 and nothing else. You have two options imo: 1) Move your DNS to someone else... ( dns.he.net ) is a free alternative however they are not the most reliable.. 99.9% up. Rather than querying your server for your domain info, just get someone else to handle your DNS. Once your DNS is handled by someone else, then you can try shutting down named as its probably not used any more.. 2) Change the port your VPN uses..?

You will lost your DNS server. You should change port for OpenVPN.

Why do you want to use port 53 for openvpn?
