HostGator vs ResellerZoom

Posted by Milo, 11-26-2005, 06:19 PM
I want to be a reseller and have narrowed down which company I'm going to use to HostGator or ResellerZoom. Now I need some help deciding between these two excellent companies. The pros for HostGator are that for about $75/mo I get half-again as much diskspace as I would with RZ (15g versus 10g.) Furthermore, reading threads here seem to indicate that HostGator has excellent support. I know that when I contacted them at 3:00 in the morning to ask pre-sales questions, I got an immediate and helpful response. The pro for ResellerZoom is mostly the fact that they will offer end-user support. Since me and my partner can't assist people 24/7, and we want to make solid support one of the cornerstones of our company, having someone around to pick up the slack makes thing very helpful. Additionally, RZ offers overselling which HG doesn't. Does anyone have any advice on choosing between them? Or is it a case where I won't really go wrong regardless of who I choose. Perhaps if overselling is allowed?

I have an Advanced account with RZ and things have been good thus far. I've submitted 2 tickets and they have been replied to within 20 minutes both times. I was going to go with hostgator but I've had bad luck with being at The Planet DC. I know it wasn't an issue with ALL of TP's server, but it turns me off. I have servers at the atlanta DC (can't think of the name). and NAC. Last edited by kubicle; 11-26-2005 at 06:39 PM.

I had the same question: hostgator or resellerZoom. To me support 24x7 and overselling are plus points for ResellerZoom. When i posted on this forum someone suggested that personal contact with customers is imp and so having 'end user support ' was not such a big thing. But i think i disagree with that notion as having end user support is imp 'cause i am at work 8 hrs a day and in no position to attend phone calls for customers. Secondly i contacted hostgator live support and they confirmed that they do not provide end user support also they sent me this: see below ******** Overselling Information Overselling refers to the ability to sell more bandwidth and disk space than you have purchased. We do hosting based on allocation which means if you have a 1,000 mbs of space and you assign out 100mb you only have 900mbs left to assign. Weve yet to see a reseller hosting company pull this off successfully. The truth is if overselling worked we wouldnt run our own servers, we wouldnt need to! It would be far cheaper and much easier for us to purchase reseller plans with overselling. Here are some stats for you Our average server has a 200 gig hard drive. Guess how full that drive is before the server is completely full? 30-40 gigs!!! So basically the server has 160 gigs of space left on it but we cant use it because the server is full. Servers run out of cpu and memory way before they run out of disk space. Our lowest server has 2 gigs of ram and is a dual xeon 2.4 Bandwidth All of our servers come with at least 1500 gigs of bandwidth each. We use on average 500 gigs of bandwidth per server meaning 1,000 gigs of bandwidth go unused every month. What would happen if we used the full 200 gigs of disk space and bandwidth? It would be called overselling and we would eventually go out of business. Almost all overselling hosts start out the same Clients have great uptime, servers are fast etc. As more time goes by the server becomes more and more filled from resellers using what they purchased and downtime gradually gets worse. People who purchase reseller plans with overselling enabled are going to use all of their disk space and bandwidth given enough time. The host has no control over future growth. Scenario if we offered overselling... Our smallest reseller plan is $25 a month and comes with 5 gigs of disk space. If we had only 8 resellers on this plan and they had overselling enabled eventually they will be using 40 gigs of disk space and we will be making a total of $200 a month off them. Our cost is much higher than this! This means we would have to pack more than 8 clients (40 gigs of usage) just to break even. If the server is full at 40 gigs of usage try and picture how great uptime is going to be with 16 clients (80 gigs of usage) Even with 16 clients we wouldnt be making a profit time support and everything else is factored in. So to sum it up to make money off overselling we would have to offer less support, and pack servers FULL. Even than the business model only lasts until clients start using what they paid for at which point wed have no choice but to disappear over night. When is overselling ok? Overselling can work when selling to shared hosting customers since you have the power to limit the amount of sites you sell to. Its how all you can eat buffets stay in business. The average website isnt going to use much just like the average person wont eat more than they pay. Reseller hosting plans arent like this. It would be as if the buffet owner sold a buffet to someone and allowed him to resell is all he can eat it to as many people as he could without his rate increasing. He could be paying $5 for the buffet and sell it to 1,000 people however the owner of the buffet still only makes $5 total while the reseller is making 1,000xwhatever hes charging. The buffet owner is going to run out of food and have a mob of people pissed off. Conclusions Overselling is a hot selling point to the uninformed reseller, but is not a long term business plan. Its a great way for hosting companies to make a quick buck leaving their resellers without a host when they close shop. If you want to do overselling you need a dedicated server, but remember you can only fill the server with so many sites before the cpu and ram become overloaded. ******** let me know what you think of the above statement thanks

I've never used Host Zoom, but I've used Host Gator in the past and they are a very top notch company. I would recommend them.

I would love to sign up with hostgator but enduser support is very imp for me. Reseller zooms enduser support is sort of making me choose them over hostgator. In any case i have to give it more thought. Pl make suggestion if anyone wants to. Thanks

If end user support is important to you than you should have no trouble making a decision, because HostGator does not offer end user support. Best of luck, either of them will be a good choice

I've used HostGator before, and I think they're the best out there. Host Zoom may have some features HostGator doesn't offer, but overall service, reliability, and value goes to HostGator in my opinion .

It's ResellerZoom guys Big different between HostingZoom and ResellerZoom. I'd recommend you try ResellerZoom. Take their 30-day guarantee for a test drive.

i'm a bit unhappy on reseller zoom i've an advanced account and i'vre problems when installing scripts that they put in fantastico i' tryed to install typo3 just to test it but i've a lot of internal server error when just trying to configure it - what do you think for your clients that are not able to use the scripts that you sell in your cpanel?? i'm thinking to move on hostgator..

I don't know how many times I have to say this. 1. CREATE A SUPPORT TICKET. 2. REQUEST THAT THEY SET UP AN .HTACCESS FILE FOR YOUR ACCOUNT! ResellerZoom's servers have ZendOptimizer and other software enabled on their servers. You all need to learn that not all hosts have the same config. What may work on one host without any tweaking, may need tweaking on ANOTHER host. But please, PLEASE, PLEASE! Make use of their Support Desk. That's what it's there for.

IMHO - that statement is full of contradictions. See, they state that if they offered overselling, more clients will use up the space they purchased - but what is wrong with that? If they have any problem with clients using what they purchased (as it seems they do) then they must be overselling themselves. They are mocking overselling so much, but they do it themselves. What's up with that?

The main point is that overselling is not good for the reseller hosting/servers (since they have no control over resellers), but it can be used for shared hosting (and yes HG oversells on their shared servers, but they do not oversell on reseller servers). I totally agree with this policy. Of course you can oversell on reseller servers, but you have at some point limit the number of domains, pop accounts, mysql dbs will be setup by resellers etc.

Servint and Hostgator are pretty consistent in good quality of offerings and service. Every provider will have an occassional glitch but an honest response and reasonably prompt solution from tech support are considered basic requirements. I certainly disagree about the Resellerzoom advanced plan being okay. If you don't mind server loads of 10-40 cpu's on a pretty consistent basis, ineffective or absent tech support, greatly oversold server with disk space at almost 90% full then choose resellerzoom.

We have a reseller account with ResellerZoom and we were happy with it until a few weeks ago when it started to run slowly, particular services are down and the server load is huge ! I will attach 2 pics one from the prvious week and one captured a few minutes ago from our reseller CPanel.

I emailed resellerzoom to ask if they offered "livechat' support for endusers if i buy their advanced package -- but they said they do not offer live support only email support to end users. Anyone know of any services that offer "live support" to endusers? thanks

Posted by swflnetworks, 12-07-2005, 01:53 PM
I seriously doubt anyone will. With how expensive the software is. Besides.. ResellerZoom usually always reply to your customers within the hour.

Hi, From the information found in your profile it should be noted that you are on a budget server. I will agree that even a constant server load of 10 is a problem however reviewing the server you on on I can't agree that it's consistent at 10-40 as mentioned and disk usage on home is currently at 37%.

Posted by ioZoom, 12-07-2005, 10:14 PM
Hi, This sounds like server load spike which is normal from time to time. Feel free to PM me your ticket number and I'll review it.

No we don't but you can check out www.varhosting.net.
