Reseller Hosts closer to the West Coast?

Posted by Maxi, 10-20-2005, 10:28 PM
Hi all I am looking for a good reliable reseller host to join up with, that host their servers in either ThePlanet datacentres in texas, or some datacentre closer to the West Coast (i'm sure there's one somewhere?). I am in Australia, so all the hosts that use datacentres on the East coast, thanks but no thanks. I would get my own dedicated server, but i'm not quite at the stage where I can fork out that kind of money just to see it idle 90% of the time, so still looking at shared (unix/whm/cpanel or unix/other mgmt app) hosting. I'm currently with Kwikhosting (or whoever bought them over), but they moved from Theplanet down to a datacentre in Florida, which unfortunately increased my ping times, as they've been great otherwise. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed, Thanks Max

I've heard good things about Dotable (http://www.dotable.com/index.htm) and they have their servers in LA.

For west coast hosting, I'd recommend OneStop.net. Their facilities are based out of LA. I've done some business before with them on dedicated servers, always had excellent uptime and prompt customer service.

Hi there! Both Resellers Panel and HostCentric use the same data center in Fremont, California, for their reseller operations.

And they target Australia, too! great choice.

Yeah I was talking to him the other day, its a possibility, though does anyone know Aussie bob's direct email address? (One that doesnt get redirected to his ticketing system, because I keep getting bounce-backs.. some error to do with his zend optimiser being expired?) Tried to private msg him on here too, but that feature's disabled? bleh.. Yourlocalhost looks ok too, but I don't like the idea of limiting the amount of accounts on each plan. Thanks Max

I believe it's bob AT dotable.com. PMs are disabled until you have 5 posts. IMHO, limiting the # of accounts on each plan is a good practice. You really don't want users to come and have 500+ (even if they're small sites) websites on one reseller account.

Yeh, but within reason. 20 on the starter plan is pretty restrictive.. I mean, I setup 3 separate sites for for each one (almost) of my clients.. dev.. uat.. live. You wouldn't bother if you purely just hosted, but I do development work for them too, so its handy doing it this way.

It's funny that. I hadn't looked at dotable before but I remember when Bob had httpme he limited the number of domains on accounts and explained very thoroughly his reasons why The reason being as I recall, that otherwise servers became overloaded but with domain limits you could have real expectations of how many reseller accounts to put on one server and still have it function at optimum levels Yet now he offers unlimited domains Strange Possibly similar to when he started and said he would only ever have something like 100 hundred clients as that was all he needed and could support and once he rreached that number he would stop taking new clients Mind you that changed but brought up a very interesting debate here as I recall ah well We limit the number of accounts for the very reasons Bob put forward and totally agree with his earlier point of view By offering unlimited domains you have no idea how many sites may go on each reseller account Therefore you can have a server reaching capacity very quickly and with all resellers not even having reached the limits of their plans and having the more than reasonable expectation of being able to continue to add domains with adverse effect on server performance In turn this means you either let the server performance suffer or you have to start moving resellers to other servers, thereby causing inconvenience to them and their clients It is also true that it is not always the number of sites on a server but their resource usage that causes this effect, which is something as a provider you can never predict The priority is to fill a server while still having it run at optimum levels and maintain a high level of service before bringing another server online Limiting the number of domains per plan greatly increases the chances of being able to do this Maxi You say "I setup 3 separate sites for for each one (almost) of my clients.. dev.. uat.. live. " Would these not be subdomains or subfolders of the one account and not separate domains therefore it would be only one domain?

Sometimes, to be innovative, one has to change their thoughts on something!

Actually he originally offered unlimited domains then after a while I believe he found it unmanageable hence the change to limited domains

Just to clarify This is not meant to be a bag Bob session I just wanted to explain our reasons behind the limited domains sorry if this got OT

I know that DigitallyJustified.com has reseller hosting with servers in Vancouver, BC Canada.

But with overselling disabled. That's the difference, and makes offerring the unlimited domain model more paletable, from this side of the fence. It was actually 250 clients, if my memory serves me correct. Indeed it did.

Nope, if they were part of the one account, I would have to either setup more plans, or expand the plans I have to x3. Eg, beginner has 1 mysql database, suddenly it becomes 3, etc. Also, having them separate minimises the amount of coding changes I need to perform when moving the site from dev > uat > live. Also if I need to do a rollback, they're all individually controlled and that's easier to do as well. Bob! Check your bob AT ... email account Thanks Max

Check servertweak.com . They are Fremont, CA-based, as well as Hurricane Electic (where their servers are).

I would suggest using a tool like Ping Plotter. PingPlotter is a network troubleshooting and diagnostic tool. It uses a combination of traceroute, ping, and whois to collect data quickly, and then allows you to continue to collect data over time to give you the information you really need to identify problems (both short-term and long-term trends). This will allow you to find the best solution on the adverage not just at a single point in time.

TVCNet is pretty hard to beat customer service and integrity wise (also located in Fremont, CA): http://tvcnet.com/online/abouttestimonials.php At least worth a looksee. See ya.
