Any idea the ideal config of a windows server, able to support about 1000-1500 shared hosting clients with 50-50 static website / dynamic website ratio. What server config would your think this should have?

You should go for either Intel I7 series or Xeon series with RAID 10 using Hardware RAID controller with either SATA drives or SAS drives. The web server, mail server and DB server should always be kept separate for better performance and security. Memory for each server should be 4 GB to 8 GB.

prashant : this would require series of servers.. ultimately may not justify the pricing of the server to the shared accounts prices. How about Neleham servers with 12gb ram RAID 1?

My suggestion was for best performance. You said static-dynamic ratio is 50-50. This means you will be having around 500-750 database driven websites which can be really resource intensive. It is advisable to keep them separate. RAID 10 scores over RAID 1 in terms of performance. Also, since you want to run shared hosting, I would recommend you have proper TOS and SLAs defined to ensure that the server resources are not misused by any website/application. For mail server, you can go for a I5 series which would reduce cost a bit. But a single server will always be dangerous even if you have huge RAM. Any questions?

Not getting into the hardware details, ideally, you should have one server serving web content and another server for database services. I wouldn't put everything on one server - that way you can get more on each system. I'd also recommend the latest and greatest Windows 2008 R2
