unfortunately you can upgrade it now. centos use the best/stable version for any package. you can upgrade to another version using source package installation.

or you can install it from RPM package.
if you're getting error (not satisfy) dependencies then satisfy that first.

ups,, i forgot to note this :
they're (many *nix distro) always have a reason not updating/upgrading some packages. maybe this openssh current version is very secure and stable for centos for now?
did you know why many people talking about how's secure is openbsd?!

we are using centos 5.5
not idea about OpenBSD & FreeBSD

No,, i mean latest version is not always good. all i want to tell you is, take a look at openbsd packages, they do this because they need/want/must. i'm using centos too for my server. and a couple of my packages is outdated. :p

CentOS backports their software packages. So, unless there is something in the newer versions that you want functionality-wise, you can sleep good at night issuing the software updates to your installed software packages through your update manager (in this case yum).
