Sounds like an authentication error. Can you let us know what program he is using to send mail? If its outlook make sure they have "My SMTP server requires authentication" checked.

Check the hostname (or the name the mailserver is presenting itself) of the sending mailserver. Look up the rfc concerning smtp. RFC2821: And so on. You have to configure it to a FQDN or a address literal. Error messages do have a meaning.

The sending domain's SMTP server is not setup with a FQDN (fully qualified domain name). This is a common mistake on many linux / sendmail implementations. Usualy reason is the actual linux machine's hostname has not been set, and is left at something like "localhost". This sounds like it's not on your end to fix, it would be the admin of the domain that your client can not receive mail FROM. Above the log example you listed, there should be the initial HELO initiation, which will list the hostname they are connecting as. Look for things like "localhost" or a hostname with no .com, .net, etc. That will at least verify this is the issue. Nothing you can really do about it other than try to pass the info along to the domain's mail admin.

Our mail server" means a server other than the one where test@example.com is created? Ie your server is not receiving mails from the server where test@example.com is created?
