Why?

Posted by eightyford, 05-06-2005, 01:00 PM
Why would someone buy from a reseller and not from a large company? I'm sure there's good reasons, I just don't know them!

Resellers sometimes give more personal support, or they also do things like web design so it is a one stop shop. I would imagine many also have no idea their is a different or don't care either way.

That makes sense, does the reseller usually buy a whole server (or many) from a large company and just become the admin of the machine or is the support usually less hands on?

Anything and everything. Some will rent a fully managed server and resell that space, some will rent an unmanaged server and manage it themselves and some will own their own servers and colocate them.

Reseller normally does not take a full server. They generally opt for a VPS in which they have a limitation on the number of domains and users. In case they have some good requirement then only they go for a dedicated server. This increases the possibilities of decrease in the speed of the server. This is the main drawback of having the hosting service with a reseller.

Usually the little guy will go the extra mile for the customers, and that's why I stick with the little guy (for the most part)

Well you be surprised that most of the users out there are not exactly saavy at all. They simply do not know the difference.

Thanks all. I'll definately consider that when I switch hosts, I don't need hand-holding but a little support(at 1and1 now) would definately save me some headaches.

Oh, I forgot one thing. Most of the time if you go with a mainstream company you are not as "valued" as when you are with a smaller company. The reason is simple. With a smaller company, they NEED your business to survive and expand. With a larger, you're just one of thousands and can easily be replaced. This is not true with ALL companies, but for the majority of big ones it seems to hold true most of the time.
