Quick question: Why do I have to type "www" for some sites and not for others?

I just started a few webpages using cPanels WHM, but why is it that on some of them I need to type www to access them and others I do not? They were all created in the same fashion so I don't understand. Anyone know how to fix this problem? I've been reading WHT for about a month now and it has been very helpful, thanks in advance to anyone who knows how to fix this! Lane

It is a problm how the DNS was setup. If your DNS is automatically setup by your Control Panel look into why it did not setup correctly. For all subdomains you want a wildcard like *.linkonus.com in the DNS. This will then cover anything before the domain and direct it to the same location. You can also check your DNS locally if you have shell access. Type: host [domain] it will return how dns is set locally, look for problems there first. Same for our domain. [admin@cp admin]$ host linkonus.com linkonus.com has address 216.240.136.60 linkonus.com mail is handled (pri=10) by mail.linkonus.net [admin@cp admin]$ host *.linkonus.com *.linkonus.com has address 216.240.136.60

the www configuaration depends on your webhost.

Yes I seem to have a problem with .domain.com working with dreamhost, if www.mydomain.com is entered it works ok.

You wrote .domain.com >> loose the leading dot.

With CPanel, domains should automatically be setup to work as domain.com and www.domain.com . If you post the actual domain you're having issues with, someone here can look at the DNS records to see if something's off.

All of them resolve for me so if you are having problems then it is most likely a cache issue with your ISP or your local machine.

well as long as they resolve for the rest of the world I guess it would not matter eh? Problem resolved.

most will work without www instead. Its your webhost but most provide both it actually works as a subdomain that redirect you to the main site that does not contain www

There are two areas to set that: both in the Apache configs, and/or the DNS server. So if either one is missing it won't work correctly. In any case, it's something only the host can take care of.
