How to host a VPN?

Posted by Mangoandbananas, 09-02-2010, 08:27 AM
Hi, Id like to set up my own VPN for my computer. Ive tried a VPN service before and I didnt like it. Instead of paying someone for crap service, from anyone ranging from china to india, I would rather have host my own VPN on a paid server (VPS,etc), instead of signing up with a complete stranger, with god knows what he or she is doing with my information. Could you reccomend me some hosts and solutions, I know the basic way to set up a VPN via the connection wizrd, IP, username and password. Could someone help a newb to VPNs out, it would be much appreciated. VPS is okay, I suppose. Im a total newb to this.

I would recommend using openVPN as it is quite simple to use and install

looks user friendly, could you tell me basically how to do it, like the whole process of aqcuiring a server, do I just phurchase a monthly subscription? then what? Do I need to contact the company?

you can purche monthly subscription for vps (the 64MB is good enough if you want only openvpn for one user) you can find cheap offers on lowendbox.com than you install os by whatever tools the provider offers (I would personally recommend debian) and then install and configure openvpn http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-so...ini-howto.html
