Would it be a good investment to buy from a reseller to start a shell / webhosting business. Or is the compitition too high these days. I have been debating the ideas for about 6 months now but I just REALLY need some valuable input.

To start a web hosting business I would start out with a reseller plan until you get enough business to get your own servers. There is a lot of competition out there but there is also a lot of customers that still need hosting. With the reseller account you can find your target market and grow from there.

DevNRG: About vip-hosting, they are marketing their services left and right though I haven't seen a thread on WHT about them yet. As radv mentioned, a reseller hosting account is *definitely* a good way to start out in hosting so you don't burn through too much cash setting up a dedicated server and other capital expenditure. What about offering shell services. thumbs up or down?

I highly doubt vip-hosting offer shell services in a reseller environment. In fact, they'd be simply crazy to do so. I would be greatly surprised. Simon

Debating 6 months with who? You hav only 4 post here Anyway, I think this business is all about strategy and niche or segment you are going for. Every customer have different needs. A lot of ppl or company may not even realize they need a website, until one fine day you tell them "I am operating a web hosting company" . Then the thought of a web site came to their mind. So tell ppl what you do and they will come back to you when they need it. It isnt like 90% of your friends is a web hoster ... =). So what competition are you talking about ??

I co-founded the channel #bnc on DALNet so I see alot of traffic for webhoting and shells on there. Thats where Im seeing the competition. And as for who I was debating with, it was my cousin, both of us are still unsure if we want to take this venture or not.

If you read the statistics, they are saying more and more ppl will get on the net. Therefore more and more ppl will want to do business on the net to capture the market. Therefore more and more people will require a web host. Not just a simple web host, but a quality web host, one that will ensure uptime and support. Hope this helps Joshua

If you build a good business model around your business plan then there is always room for an additional web host. It's a crowded market but that does not mean that you cannot succeed.

What is your budget? If you have about 30, you should take a VPS server that allow irc. Remember to maximize security on server :]

My budget runs around $500. Need to get LLC license, domain, etc.
