Running a mirror site

I have a large portal that is growing fast. Each day, I have writers submitting articles and a forum that receives massive traffic + posts. I currently have my website on a VPS that is sufficient for my needs. There have been many unsuccessful attempt to hack the website. I am thinking along the lines of having a mirror website on another hosting package that is updated daily by backup or other means. If my live website is eventually hacked, I can point my DNS to my mirror website and be operational again without any dramas. Is this possible and how would I go about setting this up. Any info would be appreciated. Lyn

Mirroring is definitely a solution. But its is also suggested to backup your data if the website is critical , as it is possible that the hacked website is mirrored by accident and if you do not see the hack in time. To mirror the website , all you need to do is sync the database and files every hour or so , so that you get the most recent data in both the servers or locations .

You could also consider a model where the submissions land at another server and get pushed to the viewing server. You may also wish to have your server security config reviewed by a reputable service and consider it to be an investment in prevention. Of course, even after a review, you should maintain the attitude that you will eventually get hacked and prepare for it as you are doing now. BTW, do not leave the credentials for the backup server lying around on the public server, even if it is in a secured area. Let the backup server authenticate to the public server. And of course, do not use the same credentials on both machines. And do not leave any pointers on the public machine about the backup machine. Keep the existence of the backup machine as hidden as possible. You may want to keep the backup machine firewalled off so that only you can communicate with it, and that it can only communicate with the public machine for the purpose of pulling the backups. .
