If you don't have funds for both web hosting and the billing software, where will you be in a few months? Will you even be stable to manage everything with the little amount of money you do have? Also, what if something happens and you have to spend money such as a HD crash and others? Think about these first before starting your own company.

Find a host that offers this as an addon or that is included with your resellers acct. Search Hotscripts for free billing software,as there are some available.(WHT is a good place to do a search also)

Whois.Cart is a good starting point, and it's quite cheap. Modernbill also do a monthly billed option, so it won't take a massive bite out of your budget. PerlBill is also another good system, this is our system of choice as it isn't too automated. It's nice to have control. Dan

I was wondering the same thing a week ago. I came to the conclusion it was easier to write a simple billing program until I am ready to invest in an expensive one. If you write it well, you may never end up actually having to buy one

It always perplexes me how many people insist on starting a "business" with no funds. If you don't even have the funds to buy a simple billing solution for a few hundred bucks, you don't have enough money to start a "business". Period. Vito

I totally agree here. I think the one exception is if you're creating all of your own software, at which point your business tools also become an asset.

I'd have to agree. When PC first started up, the investment was a very reasonable amount, and as far as I was concerned, we didn't have the money to purchase a billing solution (granted 3 years ago, there were a LOT less options). In reality, we did, but conservation was obviously a priority, so a custom database was coded. Nowdays, even without updates, I'm still asked constantly about our database, people wanting snippets of the code, people wanting subforms/modules, and people asking if we'd ever consider selling the DB (less the data), it's very bland, but very functional none the less. I see lots of other small businesses operating from quickbooks, which is a good possibility for most IMHO (though not webhosting driven). If you cant afford to shell out a few hundred for a billing solution, chances are you'd be better keeping your lunch money to buy yourself lunches IMHO.

Check out: http://www.mirndtsoft.com/features.php?which=31 It's not too expensive (US$25). I haven't used it, but seems to have most of the features you would want. Also, check out Tiny Tool: http://www.teatoast.com/PmWiki

Don't underestimate quickbooks. QuickBooks (currently used by the Nova Scotian government, and other provinces) is a powerful, powerful accounting tool in it's full working order. Simon

Can you do everything in modern bill in quickbook ? Joshua

Posted by IHSL, 12-06-2004, 02:25 PM
ModernBill and quickbooks actually work in harmony with one another. QuickBooks is accounting software, and whilst you can signup and get processing through the system also, it's primary use is for "balancing the books". We've used it for three years, and every accountant I know, uses it nowadays. Simon

We actually use it also. It ties in at a different level (our DB handles the day to day sales, but QB handles the purchasing, tax, CPP/EI/Tax for employee's, and takes in the net amount of sales/gst/etc.). I've just been getting familiar with it this past year, and have been reasonably impressed (its multi currency bit has some major bugs, but it works).
