hi, This is the first time I'm doing everything on my own, so my questions are posed to understand ease-of-use first and features second. 1. Nagios vs Zabbix for monitoring 2. snort vs OSSEC for IDS NOTE: I dont understand the deal with downloading new rules - should they affect which software I choose. thanks in advance !

Snort is a NIDS, OSSEC is a HIDS two different beasts.

i hate nagios. Zabbix is blah. I use cacti. Snort for your network OSSEC you install on the server... OSSEC is cool but i dont like the active response.
