Upgrading MySQL on Cpanel server

Posted by nitaish, 04-18-2010, 05:41 AM
I can see an option to upgrade MySQL on the Cpanel Servers to the version 5.1.x. Is it recommended to upgrade to the new version or I should stick to the current 5.0.x version?

Hello, Which version you are using for httpd?

I would stick with 5.0 for now. There are a number of changes between 5.0 > 5.1 which may break a number of scripts.

If you have plans to upgrade then here is the link from Cpanel, http://forums.cpanel.net/f145/inquir...al-141865.html before upgrading backup the currently DBs. Its always good to have backups while making major changes.

Why exactly are you upgrading? Are you facing any problem with the current version of Mysql in the server? Well, you should always have the latest stable version of all the software in your server, but you should be very very careful while upgrading software like mysql. If you really want to upgrade to 5.1, make sure you take backup of all the database. Also inform your clients beforehand so that they don't panic if anything goes wrong.

I upgraded to 5.1 on web01 a few weeks ago, Backed up all the DB's then upgraded didn't appear to break anything, But your not using the same DB's as all my clients so you never know, Keep in mind that once you upgrade it is IMPOSSIBLE to downgrade your MySQL Version.

Upgrade to version 5.1 The older version has a security bug which is Mysql bypass exploit.
