u2mike.com down??

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 02:01 AM
Anyone able to get to www.u2mike.com? Just checking I have a reseller acct but cannot access u2mike's site to submit a trouble ticket

Posted by CD Burnt, 07-03-2005, 02:05 AM
I just failed to reach it, too.

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 02:21 AM
Yes, it has been down fo a long time. And also their msn/icq support is not available.

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 06:51 AM
According to the reports I got, they have been down for at least 13 hours. About from the actual damage causd by this downtime, what is worriying is that during all this time u2mike didn't even send any message to its customers regarding the nature of the problem. Usually their support is good and customers are not kept in the dark regarding significant problems.

u2mike com has been down for ..14 hours 21 min at this stage

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 09:16 AM
u2mike.com, which I chose for its very good reputation for a low-budget nont-profit website, has been down for about 16 hours or so, and so far there is no sign of life from them. E-mails are not responded (probably they are simply not received) and the support staff is unavailable on MSN/ICQ. While I hope they'll get their server up soon, I am beginning to think whether I need to protect important websites against such failures, and am wondering whether you know of cheap (in this case, the organization's budget is really minimal) means to assure availability. I read about Zoneedit's failover and mail backup services, which I suppose I could combine with a backup hosting account with another company. Would this be a good solution? Is there anything better I can do to keep the website & e-mail available, again, without a large expediture? Are there hosting companies that provide such failover services themselves? Thanks for you help.

Posted by pmabraham, 07-03-2005, 09:34 AM
Greetings: If they are a solid company, 16 hours of down time should not happen. A solid company, which may not have budget prices, would have a minimum of 99.5% up time. Thank you.

okok, You might want to try sending it via the form on their new brand's site: http://www.vpseasy.com/contact.php -GSV

Hi, Have you tried to contact Mike through email? Or even call him (if you are in Canada?)

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 10:34 AM
Actually, yes I tried and I am not in Canada. The phone just rang and rang.

Via host-tracker.com it seems that there are 4 out of 23 nodes that note the the sites I have hosted with u2mike are still online apparently. So it might just be a silly nameserver thingy that went berserk. I still have no access to my site.

Posted by hcm, 07-03-2005, 12:29 PM
This is unbelievably bad. I was going to call today but since someone else tried and could not get through I will not waste my time. I just emailed the shaw.ca address and will hopefully get a reply soon. I also emailed support@vpseasy.com. VPS Easy (vpseasy.com) is the "sister company" of U2Mike. I just noticed that the phone number listed above (17807901758) is different than the one that I have from the latest invoice (which thankfully I haven't paid yet). Ph: 780-995-9573, fax: 780-929-9337 Which phone number did you call? If it is this number 17807901758 which rang and rang then I will try calling this number 780-995-9573 to try to get an answer. This is the full info from the latest invoice: u2mike.com 4110 44 St Beaumont,Alberta T4X 1M6 Canada Phone : (780)995-9573 Fax : (780)929-9337 The Whois record for vpseasy.com has this additional phone number: (780) 929-9336 Last edited by hcm; 07-03-2005 at 12:48 PM.

I'm on Server 4 I wonder if all U2 servers are down? Data centre problems?

Posted by hcm, 07-03-2005, 01:46 PM
Does anyone know where U2Mike's servers are located? Maybe we could get some sort of info from the datacenter?

Posted by mikeage, 07-03-2005, 01:54 PM
It seems like the servers might be moving. Server4 used to be at, but that now shows a machine running debian (instead of CentOS) and apache2 (instead of 1.33). Perhaps datacenter issues? I've been with u2mike for about 5 months, and I've always been satisfied, although I would like an answer.

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 02:03 PM
I agree I have been with him about the same. I have ALWAYS been very happy with mike. I hope this is just a glitch albiet a large one but just a glitch.

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 02:18 PM
In any casem one would expect them at least to e-mail clients, or post an update here. Their disapperance is very worrying and suggests it is more serious than a "glitch"...

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 02:26 PM
true. Also I am hosted I think at LayeredTech

Posted by hcm, 07-03-2005, 02:27 PM
How did you find out this info? I believe my sites are on server4 as well.

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 02:44 PM
Only server 4 is down/gone/whatever. Their other servers are up. They can be accessed using server[#].u2knetworks.com

yep good idea

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 03:02 PM
I did that many hours ago. No reply.

Posted by gavingreen, 07-03-2005, 03:12 PM
Is it just me or does it get a little tiring hearing people say "we can't afford to pay much" or "we want cheap and reliable". Business or charity makes no difference. After all, a charity is a business - it just pays out its profits to a good cause instead of shareholders. Any well run organisation will understand that reliability has a price and that a web hosting provider that sounds too good to be true.... probably is.

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 03:38 PM
I was paying $25.00 per month and the sites I host hit at the most 200mb of bandwidth. Of the 10 or so sites I have they are all a few pages and mostly web presence type of sites. The only other one I have has a mysql database that is updated weekly. The hosting company was fine then all the sudden GONE. After taking my annual renewal. My current hosting company was a special $100 for the year. Again I was using well below my "purchased" options. Now Appears to be gone. Tell me how much do I need to pay to get a reliable long term host? $50 for 10mb disk space and 10mb of Bandwidth. Give me a break. Tell me I am waiting. I only host those I support. I am a reseller only for the ability to add / modify sites with more flexability.

Posted by layer0, 07-03-2005, 03:41 PM
I tried that a few hrs ago myself. No reply either. Maybe it sends an e-mail to an @u2mike.com address? Either way, they should notify clients of the downtime. -GSV

Posted by Nadabrahma, 07-03-2005, 03:47 PM
I think that price is not that low, really. At Micfo, which is one company I am using myself, you could open two accounts to host 10 sites, and it would cost you about the same (or less). My Micfo site has had about 99.9% uptime, and excellent speed.

Has anyone been able to reach u2mike by phone?

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 04:17 PM
I am in the other side of the world, and since others tried to call them I didn't try to do it myself. But I did try to e-mail layeredtech a short while ago. I'll of course post an update if I receive a reply.

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 04:20 PM
no luck calling Mike earlier today.

Posted by okok, 07-03-2005, 04:42 PM
Reply from layeredtech to an e-mail explaining the issue and asking whether they can provide any information: ...

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 04:46 PM
I just sent a request, received an acknowledgement and just as quick the same response you got. What a bunch of crap

Posted by IGobyTerry, 07-03-2005, 04:50 PM
LayeredTech isn't responsible for u2mike, so expecting them to answer any questions related to them should not be expected.

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 05:06 PM
That is true. In the past many data centers would notify their clients and I have had them reply to me with at least the status of the servers. Just trying to get help. This is why so many people have issues with resellers. Who to trust. I do not need a full server. If I did I would just go directly myself.

Posted by hcm, 07-03-2005, 06:13 PM
This is no way to do business! There had better be a really good explanation for all of this. I have not gotten a response from VPS Easy either. So it looks like all of the different attempts at contacting this host have failed.

U2Mike's answer to the question: What do you do when things go wrong?

Posted by hcm, 07-03-2005, 06:38 PM
My sites are all back!

Posted by dhartung, 07-03-2005, 08:08 PM
mine too!!

Posted by N8Webs, 07-03-2005, 10:46 PM
I've been with U2Mike since Dec 2004 and the server #1 has only gone down a couple of times. This time my sites never went down (server #1), but I'm sure whatever the problem is he and his team did their best to fix it. Looks like according to his web site the problem is explained.

Posted by WireNine, 07-04-2005, 03:43 AM
u2mike.com seems to be loading fine for me here. Try contacting them through their support forums.

Posted by lokust, 07-13-2005, 08:34 AM
anyone else having trouble getting through to SERVER 4 today? Haven't had web, email or ftp access for the last 40 minutes or so

Posted by okok, 07-13-2005, 08:42 AM
Yes, and u2mike hasn't taken care of alternative means of communication with them. Their website mentioned MSN and ICQ, but both are offline. In the beginning I was very satisfied with them. When they are online the support is excellent, but these long outages and inavailbility of support are becoming quite annoying. I am seriously considering moving out.

Posted by hcm, 07-13-2005, 08:50 AM
I was just about the post the same thing. Here we go again? Actually, if this outage lasts even half as long as the last one (less than two weeks ago!) then I'm definitely looking for a new host.
