cant delete a folder as i dont have permissions?
Posted by Beatplexity, 04-17-2010, 01:23 PM |
Ive got a folder which is taking up a lot of space that i want to delete
when i log in to cuteftp it says the owner is '0'
all the other folders and files are under my username
now i think this folder was created by a server admin company when i had some work done, but now i want to delete it.
When i try to delete it under my username it says permission denied
i can log in as root owner but i cant navigate to my account where my website is (i cant find the public_html folder)

0 means root you will need to do this from the shell.

If it is a cPanel server the default location would be /home/userid/public_html
if you do not have a control-panel you could find the location in your apache configuration file. httpd.conf

You can use the locate command:

Check the apache conf file. You can see the full path for the document root of the website in the entry of the domain.

If it's cpanel, and you have root shell:
cd ~username/public_html

right ~username would be better as in theory you could have changed or have multiple home directories on different disks. the ~ tells linux to lookup the 'home'directory of the user and thus always send you to the right location. While in my example by going to /home/ could be wrong.
