low end home server on dsl line

hello, basically i am looking to see if a web server can be run on a 768 down, 128 up line. i will be transforming an older computer into a web server. It will run just IIS, and secondary DNS possibly (not so sure on that one). My concern is speed. Will it be fast enough? How much of a load can it take?

I have some experience with home office hosting, but my throughput was a bit higher. You should be able to run a basic site, but you would have to keep page content to a bare minimum. That means no images. If you manage to keep the content very small, you should be able to handle a few visitors but not many. The 128kbs is somewhat misleading, when that translates to 16KBs. So, if you manage to keep your page load down to 4KB, you theoretically could handle 4 hits at the same time. You also have to keep in mind your own usage if you use this as your internet connection. Keep in mind that with 128kbps upstream, any broadband user that visits your site on that server is definitely going to perceive the site as slow. Also, don't forget about other uses of the upstream and how they might effect the performance - or worse, how your site might affect them (eg VoIP), you might consider a QoS-capable router as well to prioritize things.
