It's hard to keep up on all the server software, so we just run an update regularly to make sure everything is up-to-date.

Hello there, To Update your servers, try doing the following command: "sudo-apt update" in your terminal. This will update it.

With CENTOS unless he installed apt, YUM is the default app installer. The command would be yum update as root.

Well, cpanel does have the upcp script which does all the updates for cpanel and third parties, but i'm not sure if it does mess with kernel updates, well, in the whm interface there is the option to manage they way cpanel updates, can't remember the name exactly but with a little search you will find it.

Server side software are updated once you update your server using apt-get , yum etc. Third party software are custom install for different websites hosted in your server. You cannot keep a check on their version. The only way is to ask the clients to keep their third party installs up-to-date so as to prevent malicious hacks/attacks

I don't think that cpanel updates the kernal, at least in the default settings. There was evidence of that on another host where their kernal was 2 years old and their server got hacked and they were running cpanel.

cPanel don't upgrade the kernel. I would recommend a manual kernel upgrade though it is possible using yum.

There is no hard and fast rule regarding the time frame to update the kernel or software. The software providers release newer upgraded versions periodically whenever a security loophole is fixed or in case of additional enhancements. Keep yourself up2date with the latest happenings and releases so that you can decide when to upgrade.
