Game servers

Greetings, I would like to conduct business by renting out game servers. For now, I would like to resell game servers rather than being responsible for overhead. Which companies would you folks recommend? Also if is it adviseable to purchase a dedicated server and hostgame servers in that manner? thank you all in advance..

No, Dedi servers won't work for gameservers. I'm not saying technically but financially... when you signup significant number of players then you will easily cross your Standard/Included BW limit... and then you start to bleed. That's how all dedi servers on offer are... you get 1000 GB BW for $120 or so but for 1000 GB more BW, they want $300-$500...so its very skewed. Only colocation will make sense for Gameservers... OR find Dedicated Servers that work in the "Colocation way" e.g. 5 Mb or 10mbs Dedicated servers. And MAKE SURE to ask pricing for additionalal Mbps commits.

Hi nipl, Thanks for replying.. what difference does it make if i purchase a dedicated server and have it managed by the source company and have the dedi server in some other location and take care of the server myself...? maybe im confusing the term "collaction" also how about RAM... if i sign up say 10 clients...then i need atleast 500 mb per server. Does anyone have any experience with servercove? maybe im confusing the term "collaction" thanks

Term colocation means you own your own server(IE purchased from dell etc) and you have it sitting at your house, then you ship it to them, they hook it up on their network. You own the hardware, where as with dedicated, the hosting company owns the hardware.

Ahh, you have Dedicated also mixed up. Dedicated **does not** mean the datacenter is going to manage it for you... UNLESS they offer FREE basic management services (e.g. servermatrix.com) does Of course Managed.com claims Managed servers... but by its service levels it should have been Lying-About-Managed.com Difference is between Dedi servers and Colocation mainly. In case of Dedi servers, the Datacenter owns the HW... they bring you in with lower costs and then nickle-a-dime you when you need more resources. For ex. 500 Mb RAM will cost $20-$25/mo 80 GB HDD will cost $30/mo etc. etc. And then once you use up your free BW allocation...then you pay in range of $1/Gb/mo for Bandwidth and that will leave you dry in a month. Colocation is Unmanaged, but gives you "realistic control" over expansion. You buy/lease your server anywhere, send it to datacenter and they charge you for Rackspace and BW..and the more BW you buy, the CHEAPER it gets (its reverse with Dedicated servers) And if you need more RAM or HDD, you send it to Datacenter, pay the install charge and not bleed every month for the upgrade. In short, server equipment is all yours... BW and Server-space is rented out by Datacenter.

Make sure you have a decent repoire with the company before you decide to fork over the cash. Especially if you are not used to installing game servers/running them.

Thank you all for replying... This has been very helpful for me... Which company would you folks recommend for purchasing servers (for colocation), RAM etc? Are Athalon processors good for such high performance applications? As far as managment goes which would be the more practical option in the long run, having a third party manage customer service or hire my own representitives? Which company would you folks recommend for Tech management? Thanks once again... Last edited by TradeMark™; 02-15-2004 at 12:16 PM.
