Email Not Received By Hotmail/Yahoo Recipients

Posted by NuPixel, 09-22-2009, 04:54 PM
I didn't know I had this issue until recently when I went to email one of my customers at their yahoo.com address. But apparently none of my emails that I send from the server reach a hotmail.com or yahoo.com address. I've tried sending email to my hotmail.com address and I get it maybe 20% of the time, but no luck with my yahoo account. My server host support was able to replicate the same issue and replied: I'm not sure what all that means or even how to fix that. I've visited the links but they don't make sense Has anyone else experienced this or have any pointers on what to do? Thanks.

SPF "Sender Policy Framework" is a method to make sure the sender address isn't faked. It checks whether the source address isn't spoofed and the ability to specify which Internet hosts are allowed to send e-mail. If you own the complete server, you can edit the DNS zone file of your domain and set the SPF record as such example.org. IN SPF "v=spf1 a mx -all" If you don't have access to edit the DNS zone, you need to ask your hosting company to do it for you.

I do have access to the server, but I don't know what/where the "DNS zone file" for any domains are. Help?

Have you checked the junk mail box? There are many factors that can affect the deliverability of email. Especially with software that auto-generate templated emails, with some email providers if too many people mark your mail as spam, nobody on the service might get your mail (I've seen both hotmail and yahoo both do this) Also check your ip against spam blacklists as well. Yes, it doesn't appear to land in the junk/bulk/spam box. Just looks like it was never delivered.

The mail server might be busy, overloaded or having technical issues. Have you tried to contact the tech support? If they couldn't solve the issue for you, you might want to switch to a different server.

I've checked with my server host and too mentioned the zone file possibly being the issue, I just don't know where/how to find it. =S Also, they checked the spam blacklists and said I wasn't on any of them so my emails should be getting delivered.

Have you actually looked at your mail log to see if yahoo is returning an error?

Posted by NuPixel, 09-22-2009, 08:05 PM
No, I'll look there and see what I can find.

First you need to check the mail log for finding the cause. Then you can dig into deep. Make sure that your Mail server IP has Reverse DNS (rDNS) set. will give the rDNS. If it is not set you need to contact support. They will in turn contact DC and will set rDNS for that IP. You can find mail server IP from your mx record. You can also try changing your mail server IP. It is easy if you have cPanel with exim as the mail server. Below are some simple steps of changing your exim IP address. Edit the exim configuration file. vi /etc/exim.conf find and add interface = ip.you.want.to.use example as shown below: IP address needs to be on server in order for this to work, hopefully this will help. Note: Just a reminder - If there is an exim update when you upgrade your cpanel server you will need to re-enter the interface again.

You need SPF and rDNS setup before you can send to Live, Hotmail, Yahoo etc.. Once you have that set up, (rDNS can be done by your server providor) visit this page https://postmaster.live.com/snds/addnetwork.aspx and put your main IP address in, follow the instructions and you will get to see if you are being blocked by Microsoft. If you are being blocked you will need to contact them to get the issue resolved or change IP address!

Try to check with the http://mxtool.com/ database if your IP has been blacklisted or not. Also check your local firewall that might be blocking the outgoing mail to hotmail/Yahoo.

also make sure your server is setup properly so you get the bounce messages. Hotmail and Live etc always send bounce messages with the reason your mail was refused in it. Site looks like it has expired, just an add page here...

Ok, then try to check through another one database tool http://mxtoolbox.com Hope this will help you.

The company I work for has about 65 clients that use Yahoo.com, and it's a very crappy Email provider. We are constantly fighting with Yahoo on getting our clients their Emails. They keep saying we are sending bulk email, as we send out a few emails per day for each client. We have rDNS, SPF etc... and still have numerous problems. Any new clients that purchase with our company we STRONGLY recommend they use a good Email Provider, not something from the 90's
