How many domains can run on one server

Posted by lentak, 06-16-2009, 05:42 AM
Hello, how many domains can be allocated on one server and run correctly without any issues? And what would be the best technical specification for the server? E.g. how many domains can I host on server with 1GB RAM, 2x250GB HDD SATA, 3Ghz CPU?

Provide details of the following Operating System used: Web Server Used: MailServer Used (if any): Database Server (if any) DNS: What else would you run on the server? Depending up on the above details, I can suggest you the number of websites you can run on the server.

Operating System used: Linux Web Server Used: Apache MailServer Used (if any): there is any but I don't know which one Database Server (if any): Mysql, PostgreSQL DNS: yes There is also Python installed. I'm not sure if this is enough, but I'm not the administrator, only sale manager. Thank you.

Depend on site like use CPU and MEM good Prepare

If you want to host websites on the server, then the recommended memory is at least 2 GB. Nowadays, 1 GB is insufficient. I am attaching two files for Linux as well as Windows servers recommending the number of websites to be hosted depending up on the hardware configuration. This could be helpful to you as well as to other hosting providers. Attached Thumbnails

To find answer to this question we need to know how big each site's files are, how much network each site consumes, and how much CPU each sites requires. We also need to know how large the server's hard drive is, and how fast the network connection is.

Yes...the number of sites that can be hosted depends on how resource intensive , the sites are.

thank you very much - quite insightful best,

Yes, I agree with other guys in order to determine this number we should know exactly how muhc resources websites will consume in the future.

It will not only depend on the hardware spec but the kind of sites that you plan to host. High traffic forums and web sites will consume lot of resources. So thats the reason why I mentioned that the hardware spec and the kind of web site matters.

I agree with you guys on this point. What I have tried to provide is a standard. I have also seen a Pentium E8400 server hosting a single website with SQL database not more than 1 GB in size consuming almost 99% cpu usage every time. Hence, there are a lot of factors depending on the types of websites hosted and the scripts running in those website. Even a small mistake in a script can consume all the resources of the server. Hence, we can never know the exact number of websites which can be easily accommodated in a single server.

On my first server, a Cel 1.7, i hosted more than 500 sites, most of the sites are small. Now most of my servers host less than 100 sites as most are bigger, 5 GB or 10 GB hosing plans. When i hosted 500 sites, hosting plans are 10 or 20 Mb. Number of sites you host depend on how large the sites are.

That's not really a quantifiable question. If you have 120G HDD, and you have one domain that has large data and files +/- 120G, then the answer is "one". If you have the same hard drive, and all sites have 50M of disk space, then roughly 2,400 domains. Number of domains is not something you calculate by...hdd space, bw traffic, and generated I/O are. With only 1G of ram, it's going to get slow pretty quick though.

Sometimes it is possible to host only one website on the server.

I'm at almost 1000 cPanel accounts/websites on an Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz) and 1GB DDR2 RAM with no slow down. Current CPU load is less than 0.5, RAM usage is at 42%, and Swap is at 5%. It all depends on the amount of traffic the sites get (right now I'm only using about 5GB/day in bandwidth).
