Posted by AdamW, 06-27-2002, 11:49 AM
I notice that many hosting companies offer "hosting" and "reseller". Is reseller a diffrent plan or something? I notice that reseller only has some other optiosn so why just not put it under a package in hosting? I'm not sure about this so can anyone explain?

Resellers are usually for people who want to be a host and who dont want to pay the monthly fee' for a dedicated server. Resellers can host more than one site, so the space can be resold. Alot of designers use these types of packages. I hope this helpes answer some of your questions

So basically a reseller is a bigger host that offers servers to smaller hosts which in turn hosts peoples websites?

Not servers as such. There are basically two types these days: Some hosts offer you the ability to re-sell their existing plans for say a 20% discount on the price they retail them at. Thus you make your money on that 20% for example, or more if you intend to charge more than them. The limitations of this would be that you can only sell what they give you, you couldn't directly control the packages *you* want to sell. The more popular method of reselling today is to get a large amount of webspace and transfer, and then have the ability to effectively carve that space as you like and offering *your* packages to your clients. This is normally more cost effective and means that you can make a lot more from reselling. Its basically like having a section of the servers resources for you to split up and sell on as you like. Hope that helps.

Take a look at a few hosts and their packages, you will notice the various types of reseller, VenturesOnline do the discounted type, where you get 20% off their packages, which you can then resell. Places like mchost.com and splashhost.com offer the bulk resellers where you buy teh space and you can then sell on custom made packages.

Resellers are using larger plans and they have the ability to resell their space upon multiple users.

I think you are right, one could present those accounts intended for resellers like any hosting account. There is however a couple of reasons that explain this distinction: One is historical: A couple of years ago, hosting companies had hosting plans on one hand and an offer to resellers on the other hand, which consisted of allowing the resellers to buy the "normal" hosting plans at a cheaper price and sell them. There was no "Reseller control pannel" and hence no "reseller account" on the system. So the reseller thing didn't compare to a hosting plan, it was more like a business relationship. Maybe the hosts got used to this summa divisio hosting/reseller and stick with it for that reason. The other is practical: Resellers are not a category of accounts, but much more a category of customers. Those who want to resell. They have specific needs regarding control pannel functionnality, anonymity, etc. and it is reasonable to present the solutions tailored to their needs in a separate section of the website, even if there's no structural difference between what they get and what an ordinary hosting customer (who doesn't intend to resell) may get for his own use. Resellers are "VIP customers" and they are given special care...
