What is the Best Forum Sotware?

Posted by GSalam, 12-22-2010, 07:06 AM
Hello WHT-ians Do you have forum for your webhosting site(s)? If yes, what software did you choose and why? Any recommendations for forum software? Thank you

Definitely wrong section, whoops My personal favorite would be MyBB. I've used it for years flawlessly. I've tried vBulletin, SMF, and others and found them either too bloated or risky.

phpBB is my favourite.

vBulletin is by far the best IMO, plenty of features and nice product to use.

Posted by kpmedia, 12-22-2010, 08:38 AM
vBulletin.

vBulletin, although the latest version is kinda iffy. phpBB otherwise. -mike

I'm a huge vBulletin fan here. I've been with it since version 2 and aside from popular opinion, feel the project is developing along great. With that said, I recently signed up at http://www.gsptalk.com/ which is my first experience with IPB in years and I have to say... I'm blown away. The IPB software offers what I would consider a more enjoyable end-user experience.

vBulletin is what even I would call the best. But if you want a free solution, I think phpBB or myBB would be sufficient.

Posted by Orien, 12-22-2010, 04:43 PM
XenForo is very promising.

Posted by RS Shamil, 12-22-2010, 06:32 PM
Very promising indeed. I'm losing my head with vBulletin; it's a year now, and the issued should have been fixed.

Posted by unity100, 12-22-2010, 08:53 PM
phpbb3 is faring fine so far.

Posted by Namworld, 12-22-2010, 09:06 PM
Currently, vBulletin is probably the best for communities with all it's features and options. But it's not the most lightweight as you might guess, a bit resource hungry :/ Not sure if I'll install a forum for my hosting yet, but currently, from my experience on all the forums I am on, I'd choose vBulletin.

Posted by MattS, 12-22-2010, 11:06 PM
Used to be all vbulletin but since using IPB lately on my most recent forum, I tend to like IPB a lot Free would be MyBB or SMF.

Posted by RS Shamil, 12-22-2010, 11:29 PM
Guys who are saying vBulletin, are you referring to vBulletin 3 or 4?

Posted by We RuNn ThiS, 12-23-2010, 03:28 PM
Xenforo is starting to earn my respect, I don't own a license YET, but I do plan on purchasing one, it is what IPB/vBulletin should be.

Posted by HostingFuze, 12-23-2010, 04:53 PM
I did see their website the other day, and it really caught my attention. Do you know how active their development team is?

Posted by backlinkexcellence, 12-23-2010, 05:01 PM
I mixed up my sites with vbulletin (which I prefer) and phpbb.

I am an IP.Board client/user (have been for years) and firmly believe in this product and the folks backing the operation. The forum industry as of late is a bit rocky in the commercial industry. I am a former vBulletin user and still do believe that their product is rock-solid. The company itself has undergone multiple changes in management (and ownership) and the actions taken as of recent have upset a large percentage of their once-supportive clientele base. All of this aside, I still do find the product to be an excellent all-around solution and a viable alternative to IP.Board. Will I make the switch back? Not likely, however this is merely due to the fact that I am thrilled with my current choice and have no real reason to make said switch back over to vBulletin. XenForo is a fairly new product and was introduced to the industry not too long ago. This venture consists of Kier Darby, Mike Sullivan, and Ashley Busby, all of whom were original members of the Jelsoft team. While I can certainly commend their efforts, I do feel that all of the hype behind their product is somewhat unwarranted at this point in the game. I have yet to see one aspect of the script itself that successfully produces the "Wow!" factor. At least in my eyes.

I've always liked vBulletin, it's worth every penny. Example: Some of the largest forums on the internet are powered by vBulletin. vBulletin is a robust and professional solution.

3 of course. Having used both IPB3 and Vbulletin 3 as well as 4, I'd list it like this. Vb3 > IPB3 > Vb4 But IPB has been working quite hard lately with additions of many useful addons, so I'd say IPB3 = Vb3 > Vb4 is more accurate in my opinion. If you want expandability, IPB3 is all the way since they have shopping cart, download, gallery, blog, content management, and subscription.

Same here I've used Vbulletin for 8+ years on my site in my signature and this is the first version I haven't automatically upgraded to, to many bugs, very few incentives, or reasons, to upgrade to. It's been "gold" for over a year now and the devs have spent the better part of that time, just bug squashing (2000ish bugs if I recall). While bug squashing is a good thing, the product itself isn't exactly revolutionary, nor is it anything worth upgrading to, in my opinion. There's a lot of resentment in the customer feedback area about how VB is being handled these days, after Internet Brands took over.

Posted by alucasa, 12-23-2010, 09:04 PM
Hasn't Internet Brands sold Vb to another company recently ? http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...nternet-Brands Well, more like another company bought IB itself.

http://xenforo.com/community/ ??

Posted by RS Shamil, 12-23-2010, 09:27 PM
Hellman + Friedman purchased IB. Hopefully, as IB's less money -orientated, things will improve.

Agreed, Tried other forum software but vB was far superior in terms of features and ease of customisation.

Posted by HostColor, 12-24-2010, 06:04 AM
My vote goes for vBulletin and SMF. We are using SMF and like it a lot.

Posted by JFSG, 12-24-2010, 06:15 AM
MyBB is my favourite choice. vBulletin looked great in v3 but v4 disappoints me. MyBB is free too. phpBB sucks. It's a pain to configure it...

Posted by bilzz, 12-24-2010, 06:29 AM
vBulletin is best i think ..

Posted by winlinuxadmins, 12-24-2010, 08:55 AM
IPB Board vision stable and reliable!!

Posted by RS Shamil, 12-24-2010, 11:20 AM
Everyone is saying vBulletin, but they're saying that vBulletin 4 is the best? That's a personal opinion. Most vB forums I see are running 3.x, which is going to EOL soon.

Posted by hostcircleBV, 12-24-2010, 11:57 AM
vBulletin has lot of features in it, and I find it to be the best

Posted by SceneWire, 12-25-2010, 05:34 PM
The future is vB4, why not start with it now? Within the next year, once a lot more developers and designers start to make the move and start to merge onto vB 4, it'll be much better for all of us.

Posted by ST-Alex, 12-28-2010, 04:59 AM
Depending on if you want to pay or not. Free:phpbb or smf Paid:ipb or vbulletin

Posted by greatseeder, 12-28-2010, 01:08 PM
MyBB has proven to be able to handle a lot of users and posts. I have used them since the beginning and I must say they're pretty good. Interesting article: http://www.vbum.com/2010/01/mybb-and...g-performance/

Posted by ramnet, 12-28-2010, 01:53 PM
I like FluxBB. Simple, straightforward, lightweight. Very nice piece of software.

Posted by Snat, 12-28-2010, 01:54 PM
I myself fancy two forum scripts - IP.Board and bbPress. Although seeing bbPress is becoming a WordPress plugin now, my view on that may change in the future.

Posted by instantIT, 12-28-2010, 02:22 PM
PhpBB would be the most people's choice as it is free. If you considering a paid one, vBulletin and InvisionPowerBoard or IPB would be suiting you with their additional features.

I love my Mybb forum software.

Posted by Mike - Limestone, 12-28-2010, 10:59 PM
Personally, vBulletin 3. Some people do like vBulletin 4, but I'm still a much bigger fan of 3. -mike

Posted by 2hourservers, 12-28-2010, 11:23 PM
We dont have a forum setup yet but we will be using vbulletin. Probably 3,8x. I think they are still having issues with 4.x

Posted by petteyg359, 12-29-2010, 01:32 AM
If you want to buy a license for a commercial forum software, go with IPB. They actually listen to their customers (just look at the feature request board, and see all that gets implemented, then do the same for vB, and see all that doesn't get implemented, and how rudely they treat people who bother to make feature requests). For a free one, I prefer SMF over phpBB. SMF's license isn't as open, but it feels much more mature to me.

Posted by ibee, 12-29-2010, 01:59 AM
vBulletin is the best forum but the latest version of it is having some glitches in implementing custom designs or skins to it. better use the 3.x version

Posted by DxSEO, 12-30-2010, 05:56 AM
I am using mybb for my forum and I think its reallyu nice for me its easy to customize it

Can any of the above mentioned forum software run on PostgreSQL instead of MySQL? Or some other, preferably free and PHP based?
