How to upgrade to PHP 6?

Posted by Tristan Perry, 03-17-2008, 11:32 AM
Hey all, I have a test VPS set-up, and I wish to upgrade to PHP 6 to test out my pre-existing websites (and make any necessary changes pro-actively). Can anyone point me in the direction of how to upgrade it (and then configure Apache 2.2, MySQL 5 etc as needed)? I'm relatively new to server-side stuff, and so step-by-step tutorial would be awesome (if any is available)? Thanks, Tristan Perry

I would hope he meant 5.2.6, otherwise I'm behind on PHP :O

There are builds available for PHP 6.0 which are considered unstable at this point obviously. You can grab them from http://snaps.php.net/ and then you'll need to compile them from source. I doubt PHP 6.0 is going to be coming out any time soon at this point. Expect 5.3.0 to come out first which supports namespaces and some of the more compatible features.

Yep, I mean the build for PHP 6.0 I understand it's not stable, although I'd really like to try it out and pre-test my websites and forums. The thing is, I don't know how to "compile them from source" - I've never actually upgraded PHP, or compiled it (etc) - hence I'm wondering if there's somewhere online that gives instructions on upgrading to PHP 6? Thanks a lot, Tristan
