Kernel Upgrade on Fedora Core 4 Server?

Posted by brandon272, 03-08-2008, 12:34 AM
I have a server running Fedora 4 and WHM/cPanel. I would like to upgrade the linux kernel to the latest version, so mosey in via SSH and type "yum -y upgrade". It downloads a few things and tells me everything is hunky dory. Now, the version it says it is currently running is: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 #1 Tue Jul 11 22:41:14 EDT 2006 Is that the really the newest version available? Maybe I'm confused as to how this works, but if I go to kernel.org it tells me the most recent stable version of the kernel is 2.6.24.3. Is this because I am running FC4? Thanks, Brandon

Hello Brandon, I am not ultra familiar with yum, as I am a apt-getter myself, however Check out this following link. IT may lead you in the proper direction. I do believe the kernel upgrades require using rpm packages, and possible recompile to patch the kernel. http://docs.fedoraproject.org/releas...fc4/#id2503979

The problem is that you are running Fedora Core 4, which reached End Of Life a while ago. There may be a few sources where you can go to get a newer kernel that will work with FC4, but I don't know any off-hand since I don't keep up with the older releases.

This is one of the many reasons I would not consider Fedora a production OS. End of Life is, what, 13 months?

What's the process to upgrade to another version of Linux (ex. CentOS)? Is that too much of a nightmare to consider? Too risky to the existing cPanel accounts on the server?

well you would have to pretty much Backup all accounts, all settings, all sql databases, and mail. You then have to format your new os, install all related software, apache, mysql, bind9, exim, etc etc, Then copy everything back over, and ensure it works properly. This shouldn't be too big of a deal if you only have a few websites hosted on the server. How about just upgrading to fcX or something? X of course being their new stable version.

Is upgrading to the latest version of Fedora easier than moving to another distro?

It should be yes. Follow the upgrade tutorial they have on their website, or otherwise google a more in-depth version. Best Regards
