Emil forwarding to an IP based address

Hi all, Don't really know where to find a solution to this and despite searching I have not got anywhere. I need to set up various selected addresses on one dedicated server to be forwarded to another server which does not have a domain name which fails. This is how I have set it up :- A dedicated server is hosting the "domain.com" and I am currently using virtusertable to forward email for "fred@domain.com" to, say "fred@aol.com" and john@domain.com" to somewhere else. I now need to forward Fred's email to a server which does not have a domain name, only an IP number. If I change Fred's forwarding to "fred@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" the mail fails with the following error : Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I can do to resolve this. Many thanks for reading this far.

You will have to have a domain with an MX record and will not be able to send directly to an IP. Depending upon your mailserver, you may be able to get creative with your mail filters and forwarding rules if it supports smarthosts. Check your mailservers documentation for that. Otherwise you will need a separate domain or subdomain. You can setup a subomain of forward.domain.com and create and MX record to point to the IP you need it to forward to. Then just use john@forward.domain.com as the forwarding address.

Looks like the recipient mailserver doesn't like that address. Anyway, what MTA are you using? If it's Exim, you can write a router + transport to give these messages a special treatment.

Ah ! My apologies, I should have mentioned at least something about the OS. Running Red Hat 9 and of course Sendmail. Thanks for the reply

Ah ! that sounds feasible, and even more important I think that is within my abilities. I will give it a go and let you know. Thanks

If postfix, try to contain the dest. address in [] brackets.. that should stop it looking up DNS If not postfix.. rtm..

Oops ! My apologies, I said I would report back but got so buried in stuff and then xmas etc !! I managed to find a dead easy way, (for some reason I couldn't get the subdomain working) apologies for messing you all about. I have a spare domain doing nothing on the original server so I set up MX to be at the second server and using virtuser redirect the selected mail to that domain. I'm sure there is be a better way but this was easy for my limited experience. Thanks again for your help. Last edited by DimTim; 01-03-2008 at 10:45 AM. Reason: typo
