Low cost SSL provider that Windows Mobile 5 will recognise, please

I have experimented with the Startcom free SSL certificates but would now like to install a low cost certificate on an Outlook Web Access server that Windows Mobile 5 devices will trust without having to load stuff onto each device. Any recommendations of suitable providers? I've looked at Godaddy but am not convinced that there is no work at the Window Mobile 5 device end. Many thanks.

why do you think it won't work the Goddady certificate? take a look at rapidssl.com

just some instructions I found on Google suggested having to install certificates on the Windows Mobile 5 device. However, if Windows Mobile will inherently trust Godaddy's certificates I am happy to go with them - at $14 - rather than pay lots more to anyone else .

i don't think you will have any problem with the Goddady certificate. but to make sure that you will not have any problems, just open a ticket at Goddady and get advised on which certificate you should acquire.

If you want low cost SSL certs, that you have control on installing your own CA cert.. just install SSL (cetificate services) on one of your windows boxes, then you can create/install your own certs in a second. If you are thinking about having external users, who would not be able to install your own CA cert (into their trusted root authorities dir), then you need to get the $$ out for a premium cert, Thawte, verisign or someone else that MS devices support - you should look at Microsofts site to determine which you'll buy, compared to what software (and on which devices you'll support) you are installing. I don't think you'll get a cheap go daddy cert working with windows mobile for instance, especially wildcards. Last edited by StevenG; 11-04-2007 at 09:39 AM.

Godaddy have replied to my support email and said their cert will work with Win Mobile 5 so I'll pay my $14 and ask for a refund if there's a problem I don't need wildcards or anythiing fancy - just want to get to the web page without any warnings. Basically the Exchange email synchronisation does not work if the certificate is invalid. My users can't be relied upon to install certs and I don't want to go round each phone and do it for them! Thanks for your help. I'll post my experience.

The (cheaper) RapidSSL certs do not work with WM5. I'm told there is an update available for the root certificates, but I haven't found it yet. :/

Any update yet? I, too, need to do this in the next couple of weeks...

Yes, just did it last night. Haven't had any feedback from people with mobile phones as yet but the certifcate works nicely with IE6 and IE7 on XP and IE7 on Vista, and Firefox. Also with Safari on OS X. Slightly hairy moment when Godaddy wanted to validate the domain by having me put an HTML file there with a certain name and content - IIS seems to stop working while the certificate is pending - but I had a workaround. Google for SSL Godaddy to get the $14.99 offer - if you go straight to the site you may pay $19.99. Also picked up a domain name for $2.

Just Great! i was almost sure that you shouldn't have a problem, but with the cheapest certificate... i am suprised!

Please update us after you hear from your mobile phone users. I am particularly interested in that...

One of my users has read and received Exchange email with his phone Had to tweak the server to make sure "integrated authentication" was selected on the Exchange Virtual Directory.
