Please check my server speed

Posted by rizwankhan, 07-03-2007, 06:49 PM
Hello, I have two servers one from hostmysite and other one is from 15minute server, I would like to know which one is faster, I have a dedicated server from 15minuteserver, but sometime I get slow speed I am not really sure which one is faster. Please test two Ips and let me know. 76.12.21.39 216.118.117.165

76.12.21.39 Averages a 88ms ping time from SJC, 14 hops away. me -> ethr.net -> level3 -> broadwing -> hostmysite 216.118.117.165 Averages a 74ms ping time from SJC, 14 hops away. me -> ethr.net -> att -> nac.net Last edited by Lightwave; 07-03-2007 at 07:08 PM.

The route to 216.118.117.165 has less latency for me.

so that means it is slow compare to hostmysite.com

No, it means I'm not exactly answering your direct question because based on the limited information provided, there's no useful answer I could give you. Latency is only going to be a small part in explaining why one server would be "slower" than another. Less latency is better.

For me I average 20ms to the hostmysite, and 33ms to 15minute server. However, that doesn't really answer the question of "I would like to know which one is faster", because, well.....that's impossible to answer based on the information we've been given.

Faster what ? Faster CPU ? Faster RAM ? Faster NIC ? Faster Hard Disks ? Do you mean which is an *apparant* shorter distance/quicker for data throughput between points A and B - that will depend very much on the connectivity of the systems at either end, the preferenced transit connections for each of them, the type of data packets being sent, the packet size, and many other variations. What *exactly* are you trying to show ?

Exactly what I was thinking, othellotech! Network speed is only one small issue when determining server speed and performance. How well a server degrades under load is another important issue. For instance, I've just replaced a server. Apparently disappointingly, the new server appeared to run most things about the same speed as the old server, however under pressure it is much faster - for instance, it does the slow cpu-intensive cpanel backups at 5x the speed of the old server (SATA vs IDE, Centos 4 vs 3, perhaps more memory) - 288 per hour vs 57 per hour.
