NL | UK - Do I need a hardware RAID server to speed up webpage load times?

Posted by financialdomains, 11-21-2016, 04:52 AM
I'm currently using a single SSD with under 100GB/mo traffic. Load times are slow, sometimes up to 3 seconds for a small size website. I've tried a few hosting places here going with the more expensive and some fair priced, I don't see a difference in performance. Any advise for a fair priced server which includes backup features, cPanel, HOSTING in NL or UK only using hardware raid SSD. they don't need to be large SSD's, 120GB will get the job done. Thanks in advance

What do you mean ? It's how much?

more expensive than hetzner and 1&1

the pricing starts to get confusing. I heard it is recommended to only use RAID 10 nowadays and I do not want a software raid, I want a hardware Raid.

Hi financialdomains, While I agree that RAID 10 with hard controller will increase the max read/white speed of your setup are you sure that disk speed (or IO) is the bottleneck which prevents you from reaching the load times you are looking for? For example a single SSD disk would be doing around 400 MB/s and RAID 10 with hard controller will reach around 1200MB/s, do you really need all that power for "a small size website" as you call it? Perhaps the best things you can do to reach lower load speed is buy a server which is as near as possible to where your customers would open your site/app from. If you are not reaching disk wait time of 5%-10% with your current single SSD chances are that you will not see an increase in performance. You might try https://tools.pingdom.com/ to see in details what is slowing your site down. It could be poorly optimized code or database. Are you using more than 50% of server RAM or 20-30% of CPU at peak times combined with more than 5%-10% disk wait time? If not chances are it is server location and/or poorly optimized code.

@financialdomains May I ask did you check the whether you have any software issues that would slow your performance?

Well, sometimes SSD's performing better with a software RAID, than a hardware. For a better performance - good and expensive RAID controller is needed. if you are limited by budget, I recommend to use software RAID than a hardware RAID with cheap HW RAID controller.

Put your money better in somebody who does optimize your website than new hardware.

Agreed - software could be the source of what is slowing your site down. I'd definitely check that first prior to switching hardware.

Hardware RAID without BBU + cache is a waste of money in my opinion. If you don't have the budget to go for a good card; go for software RAID. With SSD in particular it should perform well. Even if your performance issue isn't your disk IO, I recommend you consider switching over to at least RAID1 to reduce the risk of data loss...

Thanks for your post, it was most helpful. It seems the RAM, 16GB of it is 90% used up

Is it definitely used? http://www.linuxatemyram.com/
