Managed VPS in EU

Posted by AkosL_ITone, 09-07-2016, 01:26 AM
Hello, I'm searching a reliable VPS provider in EU with managed hosting and hostdime.co.uk seems ok. Has anyone tried it? I tried liquidweb and host4geeks. LW was very good in support and performance, but very expensive (1 core,2 gb, 100 gb ssd is 110 USD + backup + cloudlinux). Host4geeks cheap and that's it. The support is very unprofessional and slow. They use openvz-> can't use cloudlinux on VPS. My VPS has a very high load for 24 hours but they do nothing (no, it's not because traffic, the site on it has only 5-10 daily visitor). They don't have a fix support team, i get notifications from cpanel that root logged in from around the world (germany, india, usa, netherlands, etc). They don't test the solution after the ticket/problem was "solved". When i test it, everything is the same and the problem is still exist... So, is there any good vps provider in EU? Hostdime.co.uk? My budget is: 100 USD for 2 cores, 4 GB ram, 100-200 GB SSD, cpanel/cloudlinux with managed/monitored hosting.

We only have experiences with HostDime's Dedicated Servers, but in terms of support quality, I don't think they distinguish between VPS/Dedicated clients, so taking it from me, their support team is knowledgeable and well-trained. Their network has also been extremely reliable for us and they are also using KVM which will allow you to use CloudLinux.

But UK is no longer a part of Europe so I suggest you to look for other EU location like Spain. I have a good experience with Comforthost.net who provide also managed service.

Just for clarity, UK leaving the EU (European Union) doesn't mean it is no longer a part of Europe (the continent). Also, HostDime offers services in two countries within Europe: Netherlands and UK

Yes, that's a good suggestion... i'm thinking too on host on Digitalocean with platinumservermanagement.com support. I looked Comforthost.net but i didn't find managed services and they use openvz too, so i can't use cloudlinux.

@AkosL_ITone May you please say more about the content and apps you plan to host on the VPS and where is you targeted market. This would help you to get better advise.

Ok, so the background: i started a a hosting business in 2010 (when i was young and stupid.. ) with 3 reseller accounts at site5. (because the biggest is only 120 Gb without overselling option) In these days site5 service is horrible, a lot of downtime, slow support and stupid live chat. So i decided to move. i tried LW and H4G as i wrote. None of them was enough good (LW: price, H4G:quality). I have ~100 clients with 200 GB used disk space and i search a good place for it. I use WHMCS for manage accounts and billing and Amazon S3 to backup. In the near future i'd like to grow and get some new clients. I have some knowledge in hosting and server management, but i'm alone and i like to sleep without worry, so i need a managed service.

Your budget is good, you can also go for a cheap dedicated server and third party management service... It may cost you more (maybe 20-30USD) but you will have much better experience...

Just for clarity, EITHER WAY, the UK has not yet left the European Union and still firmly remains an operating member state Business as usual. Buy British.

What? They have already towed the island across the Atlantic?

Posted by AkosL_ITone, 09-07-2016, 05:55 AM
UK is good for distance (ping from other EU country) and yes, it's part of the EU in this moment, but the "safe harbor" agreement is a question for me. In this case i can't store any personal information on non-EU servers.

You've got a relatively good budget for what you require, I would say go for a smaller company as you'll usually receive a more friendly approach from someone whom has a genuine interest in making things work flawlessly for you.

Go for NL VPS/Server thn...

The fact you had persisted with your business until now and you are looking for a safe/reliable service to house your clients show that you are a good business owner. I read above that you are intending to purchase a VPS from DigitalOcean and then engage an external server management company to assist you with management of the service. While many people do this and don't run into issues with this form of setup, I think the fact that the server management company is separate from the VPS provider is a point of concern since there are certain issues (i.e. network / hardware) that the server management company may need you to request for information from the VPS provider and ultimately you would have to submit tickets to an unmanaged provider who may or may not meet the mark. This can be especially troubling if you are not available and there is a DDoS Attack or there is some hardware issue that occurs without your knowledge. Since the main reason you are leaving Site5 and Host4Geeks is due to poor support, this may be a point of concern for you and if you would like to go with the VPS, I honestly think you should get a provider that provides management (along with the VPS) or clarify with the server management company how they would handle such situations (i.e. would they log into your VPS provider's portal and request information, managing everything for you)? I think ultimately you need to decide what type of venture you want to step into. Are you looking to provide Shared Hosting services only for the long term? Or do you intend to expand and offer other products such as VPS/Dedicated Servers, and if so would you be hiring staffs? If your plans aren't as ambitious as the later ones I outlined, then you could definitely consider continuing with a Reseller Hosting package and a VPS would not be a necessity.

Spot on Jason, only the country did a "Brexit" , not the Internet!

Thank you so much for the consideration, @AkosL_ITone, we're glad to be among your considered providers. To verify what others have mentioned, we do indeed offer KVM VPS services in our UK location. To touch on another note, while European Court of Justice invalidated the US-EU Safe Harbour Framework last October, they've since reached a new agreement which is essentially a one-to-one replacement of Safe Harbour known as the EU-US Privacy Shield agreement. The full details regarding the EU-US Privacy Shield can be found at the following link: https://www.commerce.gov/privacyshield Until the new EU-US Privacy Shield has been fully launched, the US Department of Commerce will continue to administer the existing Safe Harbor List and Certifications located at http://export.gov/safeharbor . We remain in compliance for this agreement, and as soon as we can certify with the new Privacy Shield program, we will do so (they just started accepting applications for certification on Aug 1 so that's a process currently under way).

Not even the country yet.

Posted by OneStepHosting, 09-07-2016, 08:50 AM
Correct @zoid , better said voted for Brexit...whole process might take a couple of years actually...

Posted by JSCL, 09-07-2016, 09:59 AM
If you're concerned about the British future and considering this in your purchasing plans, you should consider getting a job for any major company in the UK, because Brexit is the best copout of this century. The Netherlands should be the next choice on your list, but I'd certainly leave the UK at the top. I'd estimate near enough 5 years at least until the country has left as an EU Member State but I'm also certain that the UK will be involved in any future policies such as the Privacy Shield.

Your budget is great and you should not have a hard time finding a good VPS hosting provider in Europe. Look at the offers section and try to find providers with good reviews! Good luck!

Thanks for the many advice! I decided to test Linode VPS + Platinum Server Support. Reasons: - Linode has very good price - in this scenario infrastructure is independent from server management, so i can switch server admin team at any time, without any migration. - linode is very fast, as fast as liquidweb First experience with Platinum Server Support: - the sales team not so fast, after the payment it takes more than 12 hours to activate my account - i opened a ticket, because linode and cloudlinux not working very well together. (custom CL kernel not loading). The first response was fast (about 5-10 min), but the problem is still exist, 12 hours without solution. It's not so bad, because there aren't any live service on the server, but i hope if i'll have an outage, it will faster...

Could you shoot me an email? I believe I have your account located but I'd still like to confirm and see what went wrong and answer all your questions. I always welcome feedback be it positive or negative and would love to speak to you about this and hopefully salvage the relationship. My email is kushal.r[at]h4g.co and my Skype is kush.raha. I look forward to speaking to you.

Cloudlinux will work fine. You just need to set the kernel to default OS.

I'd go with DO rather than Linode. They even have the team option for psm or some other to take actions if needed while you sleep. Also their network is superb. We've been hit (using Linode Atlanta many times and they won't solve it)

you should try third party support service who can provide best application level support on cloud linux servers. these cloud service providers are best in hardware availability support only.

You can hire a 3rd party admin even if you buy a managed VPS from a provider, as long as you have root access.

Posted by TmzHosting, 09-13-2016, 12:56 PM
To add to this, make sure the provider is OK with you getting a 3rd party admin. I have seen a lot of companies (managed) they dont want anyone else in the server and messing around with it. - Daniel

I suggest you to look for other EU locations.

You can look up for more cheap managed VPSs in Germany. Platinum Server Support is not so cheat as you choose hosting provider with already managed VPS services.

Posted by josecanelas, 09-27-2016, 09:52 AM
Try Smart Hosting UK. I have several important clients hosted in their VPS servers and none, "zero", "niente" problems

Posted by BGOcloud, 09-29-2016, 03:49 AM
I also think that your budget is more than enough and you can look for some not so big company, as it is very likely that they’ll pay more attention to you, and you’ll be more satisfied with their services. Last edited by BGOcloud; 09-29-2016 at 03:54 AM.

Is cpanel/cloudlinux must have? And why? It is managed

Posted by Gabriel-ZetServers, 09-29-2016, 05:16 AM
What do you mean exactly by management? What support level do you need? Be careful, there are many hosting providers which advertise managed services, but that means only cPanel installation.
