Can any Linux hosting service be used with RDP?

Posted by Ravion, 09-24-2016, 08:58 AM
If I purchase any Linux VPS hosting service, can I connect to it with RDP? I mean connecting to it from Windows, with RDP, to browse the internet.

No, thats not possible at all. No Linux VPS servers comes with a remote desktop option or Desktop edition. You simply get a shell access, from where you'll have to install softwares.

Technically it is possible, whether it is reasonable is another story. Why dont you go for a Windows server?

It is possible. Speaking from experience here. But unless your VPS and it's host server are decent.. expect serious lag.

There is an RDP server implementation for Linux which is called xrdp, which is an open source RDP server, which allows you to connect your Linux server with Remote Desktop from a Windows machine. You can also use teamviewer which works well too.

+1 for xrdp, it is the appropriate package for the task. If you plan to browse the internet, you can also install Firefox. You can run the following command for example to install LXDE (light-weight GUI) with xrdp and Firefox on Ubuntu: I personally prefer to connect over VNC than RDP. If you do the same, you can install a VNC server then connect over VNC too:

You can just use xrdp

I'm not sure how xrdp performs but it does look great. I'm a fan of X2go. If you're lacking in resources then use xfce or lubuntu. http://wiki.x2go.org/doku.php/doc:newtox2go

Hi, That is absolutely possible. If you get a VPS for yourself, then you can install whatever you want on it unless it violates the providers policy. If you want to use a desktop editions, you can simple purchase a KVM VPS from any VPS provider, you can ask them if they will do this for you or you can simply install OS directly with their ISO mounts or you can install graphics on the VPS they provide.

Personally I use Ubuntu 15.04 xrdp that can be accessed using RDP. Installing xRDP package is quite straight forward. The following article would help: http://www.tweaking4all.com/software...-ubuntu-14-04/

Not really. For example if you install gnome-desktop on CentOS and have console access then you could use the VPS to browse the internet on Firefox. I do that all the time.

It can be done on Linux. Just setup KDEbase, freenx, firefox, etc.... and use nomachine NX to access it from your Windows PC or Mac.

Install VNC server and use VNC viewer, You can control speed by changing available color. If you select less colors then speed will be more fast. I use Linux and I see RDP option also some other alternatives are available for Linux RDP.

Thanks for all the responses. I do have a Windows VPS, but because I'm just looking for something to browse the web with, I'm looking for something cheaper. Windows VPS costs more. Well, I'll just use it for browsing the web. Thanks, I'll take a look at it. Hi. Thanks for the info. Does it matter whether the hosting service is providing a specific build and version of Linux? Thanks for the link Thanks. I'll read up about VNC server.

A reason why you wouldnt consider a VPN? That would give a much better performance and experience.
