Linux or Windows based VPS? What's the goal for the VPN setup?

Why don't you buy a VPN itself instead of a VPS? Try hidemyass.

Linux is fine. i've been using hidemyass but netflix has blocked all the commercial vpn providers. I want to see if a personal one will get through.

If only for VPN, I think your budget enough for standard VPS, have you check in VPS Hosting Offers, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=242

You should go for a any vps having PPP enabled in order to install PPTPD or OpenVPN. The most suited VPS type will be KVM for this

Look at "PPP enabled/allowed" make sense only on OpenVZ VPS because in case of KVM VPS, KVM is full virtualization and "PPP enabled/disabled" doesn't apply for this type of virtualization. So, topic paster may forget about such option and buy any KVM VPS or try to find OpenVZ with PPP enabled (usually OpenVZ VPS much cheaper than KVM).

Pretty much any VPS can do this for you. Set up with pptpd is a 10 min job and OpenVPN isn't much more. Server dependant of course

1. You don't need to spend $10-20 for a VPS that you can use for a VPN. Any ultra-cheap VPS with minimum specs will do. Find a reliable provider from here at WebHostingTalk or at LowEndBox. Be sure to do your research before signing up - many of the low-end VPSs providers are not so good. Here is an easy OpenVPN installer script to run on your VPS: https://github.com/Nyr/openvpn-install 2. No matter which VPS you choose, you may still have issues with Netflix. I am not a Netflix user, but I have read that Netflix knows when your IP address is from a data center and not a residence. Obviously, all VPSs come from data centers. 3. Another option is to use so-called "Smart DNS" services. According to what I have read, Netflix is getting better at blocking them out, too. Still, they are cheap (typically $5 per month). If you decide to try one of them, verify that they work with Netflix.
