Suggestions wanted for small VPS for testing?

Posted by bigtom, 09-09-2016, 05:14 AM
Hi, I need to rent a small VPS for a few months which will only be used for testing sites under development. It must run CPanel, PHP 5.3 and MySQL 5.5 to be compatible with live server. I don't want to be tied into a contract. Location, data, speed, bandwidth are relatively unimportant, as there will only be a handful of small sites on it any any time. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks, Tom.

You can take a look at lowendbox.com, they specialize in collecting cheap VPS offers. I imagine you don't want to spend a lot in the few months you will have the server.

You can consider , Ramnode, Digitalocean, Atlantic, Hostsailor, Sentris, Chicagovps or look in WHT VPS offer section.

Thanks for replies. I should have mentioned my live server runs CloudLinux 6.7 - does it matter in testing compatibility with PHP 5.3 and MySQL 5.5 if the VPS runs CloudLinux or not?

Just ensure the lamp setup is what you have in your live server. Php and MySQL are the main factor for compatibility issue .

You can look into the WHT offer section. Btw... what is your budget for this?

cPanel with 1GB RAM VPS is enough for testing purpose. I think you also need to purchase cPanel license because of most of Linux VPS provider's IPs already used for cPanel trial license so you will be need to purchase cPanel license. Ask to provider who can provide you a VPS for testing purpose. I was purchased a VPS with MacOS at just $5 for testing purpose from a good provider who sell MacOS VPS at lest $40/mo but I asked them and they give me at only $5.

There are a number of "Cloud" providers out there that will charge you just for the resources you use (hourly charge). I use EC2 and Google Cloud (and despite a few issues) I'm pretty happy with them. Great way to spin up some instances for testing and such and not worry about monthly bills. There are others out there like DigitalOcean, but you'll have to do your own research on how good these services are (never used DO cloud services).

And you've personally used all of these providers? Please contact us via the following link with something to show that experience: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/report.php?p=9761043

I'd go for DIgitalOcean or Vultr. If not readily available on landing page, you might Google for coupons for those.

Usually not, but you can also run CloudLinux on a VPS but it needs to be a KVM VPS.

Maybe its just me but I always had issues in the past with running cPanel with 1GB of ram.
