VPS for Local Business Sites - Do Nearby Datacenters Matter?

Posted by jillt, 02-17-2016, 08:09 AM
I'm shopping around for a VPS to host my local client sites. I am looking for a small-medium spec'd vps account with extra IPs under $2 each as I am going to be moving my clients to SSL. I'll probably host a dozen or more local sites. I'm in the Southeast, so I've been looking for providers with datacenters in Atlanta or Charlotte, which are the closest major cities. Should I be doing this? Is D.C./VA close enough for a low load application for sites that typically receive 10-50 visits/day max? Any recommendations for such a provider? I'm looking for a fully managed account, SSD, cpanel/whm, softaculous, extra IPs for SSL for $1-1.50/each, and custom nameservers for ~30/month. THank

Server location does not make much difference as long your host has a quality network. These days, your transit from LA will only be a few milliseconds longer then from Charlotte. However, it doesn't hurt to use a near by host, just not necessary either. Also, FYI, a dedicated IP is no longer needed for SSL so don't waste the extra money if you don't need to.

I think it's always good to be as close to your customers as possible, and since many companies offer servers on different parts of the US you should be able to find something close quite easily. Then again, as long as it's on the same side of the continent the location shouldn't matter that much anyway. Personally I think you should focus more on reliability, support "quality" and the VPS itself.

Excellent replies, thank you all! Really? Using cloudflare or something else?

Posted by RDO Servers, 02-17-2016, 08:37 AM
Well, that would do it too, but you don't need that either. As long as your server supports SNI ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication) then you can have multiple websites with SSL on the same IP address.

Since >IE7 there's been an SSL extension called SNI (Server Name Indication) that allows you to use one IP for multiple SSL certificates. There's a compatibility list and some more info on Wikipedia if you scroll down: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication

Wow, totally out of the loop on that, thanks for the info!

for your budget and the usage you described, why not go for a decent reseller account instead of a VPS. You will be getting much more security and performance from a 30$ Reseller than a 30$ Fully managed cpanel VPS.

Technology nowadays is so advanced, you can choose a host in Cambodia and still be fine. I have seen people use a UK host for a local website in Los Angeles. I still agree that having the DC closer to you is a good idea, but it doesn't have to be next door. - Daniel

Really. Please tell me more, I've not considered this. The reseller accounts I used years ago seemed to just be shared accounts with supposedly more resources and reseller ability. More details or recommended reading about security and more performance with reseller vs vps please?

In a nut shell, your right. A reseller plan is a shared hosting plan that allows you to resell the space and make sub hosting account. The difference is: Your VPS will have a limited amount of resources - The shared hosting/reseller server will have way more resources total You will be responsible for fully securing and hardening your VPS - Your host will already have the shared/reseller server secured. hardened, & optimized With a VPS, you will be paying extra for the cPanel licence, and extra to have it managed. A reseller account will include these automatically. This way your money is going towards the resources you need. i.e. A reseller account for $30 vs a VPS with the same resources for $30. Plus $15/mo for cPane + $20/mo for VPS management

ok, that makes total sense. The problem I've had with shared/reseller over the years, is even though they might not be oversold initially, I've never had an account not go to crap eventually. This is why I like VPS as I've always got my allotted specs. Once I get a heavy wp install with some traffic, a shared/reseller option is terrible, at least from time-to-time. Put the same site on a VPS and it's smooth sailing. Maybe I've just not used the right providers?

Posted by RDO Servers, 02-17-2016, 10:24 AM
Hard to say really. A) VPS nodes can be oversold too, especially if the provider uses OpenVZ B) It all depends on the website, its traffic, and how well it is optimized You can host 100+ WP sites on a reseller account, if their well optimized and traffic is not too high You can also have a single WP site that will overload a VPS or even dedicated server, it it has too much traffic or is poorly optimized. The quality of the provider makes a big difference too! If your past experience was with a low quality host or a EIG brand (HostGator, iPage, Arvixe, etc), it is very likely their servers were grossly oversold

Posted by jillt, 02-17-2016, 10:28 AM
Yeah I've learned to avoid EIG like the plague. Once again, thanks for the info. I think I'll grab a vps and reseller both and see how it goes. Can you recommend a solid reseller with DC in the Southeast? I may need to start a new thread for that.

Also, a side question. What do I need to get access to adjust my profile like timezone? I'm blocked yet have been a member over a year?

Personal experience is always the best way to tell for sure!

For reseller, you can check out Hostwithlove and Mightweb. Both are excellent when it comes to performance and support. And yes, a 20-30$ Reseller with them will give you much faster sites than a 30$ managed vps with Cpanel.

Posted by jillt, 02-20-2016, 05:16 PM
Wow both of those look good ryus, thanks. Esp hostwithlove giving free comodo ssl certs. RDO, I also looked at your packages and noticed you're in my state. Where are your servers located? Also, do your packages include softaculous?

Posted by RDO Servers, 02-20-2016, 05:31 PM
Hey @jillt Thanks for considering us! I'm afraid WHT rules do not allow us to discuss our own product offerings in a thread. However since you asked 2 direct questions, I will answer those for you. We are based out of upstate SC and have Servers in multiple locations, most of which are in Charlotte NC. And yes, we do offer softaculous on our cPanel accounts. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact our sales department!

Posted by ryus, 02-20-2016, 05:39 PM
Glad you liked them. Both are excellent. Don't forget to check the offers section or contact them before ordering. I m sure you can get some discount on their already good pricing. Choose any of them and you won't go anywhere else.
