As far as I understand, SaaS means the vendor installs software for their customers, manage hosting server. But after that, 1. Will the vendor take care the upgrade, optimize script? 2. In case customers need some plugins, can they ask the vendor to do that? 3. The vendor will need to have full administrator permission to maintain all correct settings, is that correct? Thank you.

SaaS is a concept more than a set of standards. The specific services will vary from vendor to vendor. SaaS ("Software as a Service", think Gmail) is the customer-facing app that doesn't require installation (and if often sold by subscription); which can be built on PaaS ("Platform as a Service", think Google App Engine or Salesforce.com); which can be built on IaaS ("Infrastructure as a Service", think Amazon Web Services: EC2/S3/SQS/SDB). You can find more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_as_a_service You'll often also see SaaS referred to as something like "On-Demand". 3. The vendor will need to have full administrator permission to maintain all correct settings, is that correct? If you're talking about at the server-level, admin permission is usually fully on the vendor side. If you're talking about at the application level, whether the vendor has administrative access over your instance of their software is up to each vendor.
