CloudLinux and other ways of isolating WHM cPanels for performance

This must be common problem for resellers. Is there any way on a reseller setup to keep one spiking cPanel account from bogging down the whole server/VPS, aside from CloudLinux? I don't have anything against CL necessarily (though it must carry overhead), I just want to know about any other possibilities. I noticed BlueHost is now promoting server software they use to clamp down on spiking accounts, but I don't think it's CL, I think it's something BH brewed up. This question is not about BH, since we don't want an "unlimited" type of host, but I just mention it because it's relevant to my question about server software. I suspect clamping maybe has to happen at a higher level than the software layer of a typical reseller WHM, like the virtualization level of a VPS, so maybe it's hopeless. Affordably, at least. One alternative we have considered is the more common meaning of "cloud", like BitNami's front-end to Amazon EC2, since we could scale up our instance if we see the metrics spike. But it seems like it would be a hassle to get a whole WHM type of setup going in the AWS world. And pricier. Thanks in advance for any advice. Last edited by colfer; 09-01-2013 at 12:59 PM.

I'm not aware of anything that could be installed at the reseller level. You would need at least a VPS/Cloud hypervisor in order to have the privileges necessary. I think the BlueHost option is BetterLinux, I know that the founder of BlueHost developed BL (EIG could be using a different solution now, however). CL and BL are great for the price and features offered. They are especially helpful in securing shared users from themselves (insecure file permissions, etc.).

Cloudlinux generally restricts memory and processes (cpu) but not sql (please correct me if im wrong). Most loads come in this form and must be monitored manually. In my experience cloudlinux eliminates the other variables of abuse, so it make an admins job easier.

You can optionally install MySQL Governor which is an additional tool provided with CloudLinux, to limit MySQL usage per account (number of concurrent processes, I/O usage and CPU limits of MySQL accounts etc.). However all configuration needs to be done from command line, there isn't a GUI for WHM for easy configuration.

MYSQL Governor is still in beta and has caused problems for us. I recommend using MYSQL Tuner to scan your MYSQL so that you can tune it. If you can, use MariaDB instead of MYSQL too. You can also use Clod Flare too for your websites to speed them up.

I'm not sure of too many alternatives, but CloudLinux does an excellent job. There is also BetterLinux. Here's a link to another thread here where they did a comparison between the two using default settings http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...ht=betterlinux
