cPanel suphp or fcgi ?

Posted by kikloo, 03-31-2016, 02:02 AM
Hi, Read quite a lot of articles , posts on this but all are about 3-4 years old. So I feel that in 3-4 years several things might have changed, I have a server with 96 GB RAM and about 400+ small sites. Can anyone shed light as to which is beneficial now a days suphp or fcgi ?? I have CL installed. All the articles on internet and too old. A latest updated on these will be really helpful. Thank you.

If you have CL installed, use Mod_lsapi better and more stable than suphp and fcgi.

Yes but when I install mod_lsapi then httpd starts crashing. And i got license from you only!

Didn't know you get the license from us :-) We never had crashed httpd with mod_lsapi. You might need to contact your provider to check it and trouble shoot as it seems something else. Start checking at the log.

I agree with net, go with lsapi. Note though that it's on beta, so you have to monitor your error_log from time to time. CL's support is pretty quick to answer tickets but you may still have to do some work on your end, if problem arises. If lsapi is not an option, suphp for a shared server. It's more memory hungry than lsapi though.

Hi, My first choice will also be lsapi and then suPHP. suPHP more if considering security, though.

how the performance about lsapi ?

I get issues only with CL. Though I run a very simple cpanel setup and try to use softwares, modules etc as less as possible, still cl breaks for me. Now for example, my server is taking about 30 mins. or so just to do a graceful reboot. virtfs and cagefs are both enabled somehow and creating conflict with each other. mysql governor causes mysql to cause out of memory errors. If i uninstall it then it works fine. Somehow mod_lsapi is holding but i don't know. I had a server earlier also for 4 years or so on which I ran cpanel without problem for 2.5 years then came CL and cPanel and CSF started moaning to install CloudLinux for security and stuff, and somehow it worked fine for initial few months but after that it started causing problems, example: when i would reboot the server, CL won't start and cause kernel panic....i don't think CL tests properly and then updates CL or maybe its just me, that I try to keep things simpe and clean but Linux is not meant to be that way. Weird!!!

suphp hands down. No questions asked!

I also recommend suphp, did you contact cpanel support to see if they can recreate and report CL.

I recommend Ruid2 and DSO with opcache. It's stable and capable.

Hi, My recommendation would be dso with ruid and apc cache enabled. This would definitely increase the speed of the sites hosted in the server.

Hi, will it need alot ram ?

Posted by kikloo, 04-02-2016, 03:42 AM
Hi, I think after reading alot of articles etc. if you don't use CL then go for DSO otherwise do suPHP or lsapi. Though suphp is better in terms of stability etc. Thanks.

The answer will be that it will definitely provide a better performance with the same RAM and almost same security as of SuPhp.

You can always try it. Its easy to switch from dso to suphp. Also i think people refer to alot of ram when servers had ram liek 2gb, 4gb only. Now a days servers have atleast a min. of 8-16gb, so it should be fine.

Mod ruid isn't the most secure solution. Suphp is a very slow and old solution. Lsapi is the fastest solution and just as secure as suphp. If you didn't have cloudlinux I would suggest fastcgid util php-fpm is fully supported by cPanel. But lsapi is still faster than PHP-FPM.

mod_lsapi with CloudLinux is the best choice right now. With adequate RAM and CPU, I see little difference between fcgi and suphp (also assuming no opcode caching).

Mod_ruid2 with DSO is better if you don't have CloudLinux as it takes care of symlinks etc. But if you have cl then lsapi is better. But lsapi needs better visibility like susphp etc has in WHM. When recompiling apache, cpanel keeps on shwoing suphp which is confusing. Thanks.

I've also had problems with extreme slowness with CloudLinux on multiple servers; all of these were robust when CL was first installed. When it works, it's amazing. When it doesn't it turns your server farm into dogs. No joy from multiple support tickets either. Possibly related to running earlier versions of Centos (v5), but have also had the problem on later Centos versions (6).
