Reseller hosting (but not for reselling)

Posted by sontys, 12-04-2012, 02:36 PM
Hi guys. I'm searching for best reseller solution that will fit my needs. I own several business websites and I would like to put all under one WHM account. I have several people involved in each of the websites and I need to have separate cpanel etc. Requirements: - WHM & Cpanel (both will all features enabled) - private nameservers - up to 5 IPs for SSL - up to 50GB storage (max 100) - 100GB - 500GB bandwidth - Server in Europe (UK, NL, Germany) or USA (East Coast) - fast server (?) - great support (phone, email, live chat) If I missed something, please ask. Thanks

Do you've a budget in mind?

This time it fits well:-)

Ahh, that's the rub, isn't it. You won't find many cPanel resellers with legitimately excellent phone/chat/email support. One exception that comes to mind is Cartika. If you could stomach only email, Dathorn as well. You'll be at or a little over $50/month with either for your quoted amount of storage and bandwidth, both well worth it and vastly superior to almost any other options. The Search function doesn't lie. The other option is to consider HSphere as your control panel. Vastly umpteen times better than cPanel in my opinion, as it actually handles multiple domains under the same shared account properly (ie. not as much as "add-ons") and also supports clustering, as it has done (and cPanel hasn't done) for years... Good names there would be Cartika again and also FluidHosting (my host, phenomenal support and servers). If you're hell-bent on cPanel, though, the other alternative is to step up to a managed VPS with a cPanel/WHM license. Although the overall undertaking might be a bit more involved than a simple reseller account, you'd gain all the benefits of your own isolated environment. All of that and phone/chat/email can be had at LiquidWeb for $60/month, right in line with upper-level reseller accounts. Good luck!

Not any specific. I expect to get good service and good service I can't get cheap.

If you open your options for the control panel i think you get a bit more providers.

There are plenty of solid providers using cPanel. Take a look at http://MDDHosting.com or http://hawkhost.com Regarding HSphere, you really have to question the long-term viability of the panel. In the eyes of Parallels the end-all, be-all control panel has always been Plesk. How much of a development effort is maintained for HSphere remains to be seen, although they are still offering updates after 5 years.

Both seem decent, yes. But true phone support and live chat seem to be lacking. Interesting point. In conversations I've had with FluidHosting (my host, doing hsphere for 10+ years) and also with Cartika (they've in-part taken over development of the panel itself as I found out), both have indicated to me that Parallels is planning on phasing out both HSphere and Plesk with a single replacement, which they are currently alpha testing now. So it appears as if they're not looking at either with a weighted eye... It's also interesting that of all the environments I've ever hosted in for classic shared, clustered hsphere accounts have always been more stable than cpanel. Perhaps it's just due to picking better hsphere providers than cpanel ones, and also now that cloudlinux, IaaS, etc have arrived, that may be a mute point these days. Good observation, though! Thanks for the links DWS2006. I look for long-term solution and when it comes to panel, I will stick with WHM and CPanel.

You will rule out a lot of excellent providers by having Phone support as a requirement. A lot of the time Phone support techs will usually end up asking you to submit a ticket or send an email anyway.

Phone support isn't a must but using some hosting "company" without phone number, address etc is not an option. I don't plan to call them every day or go at their office. I would rather pay more to reliable company than pay $5/ month to the 1-man company, if you know what I mean. Last edited by sontys; 12-04-2012 at 05:25 PM.

Very interesting. After all those years of trying to force Plesk to the forefront (primarily by removing as much of the competition as possible from the market) it is unbelievably that they're going to re-brand now. If they can blend the best features of the two cohesively this might be good.

1 for HostDime. In my opinion they'd be your best bet for the requirements you specified.

hello, well, parallels is not abandoning the plesk brand by any means - quite the opposite http://www.parallels.com/products/plesk-automation/ its basically an hsphere/plesk hybrid - they even have an upgrade path from hsphere to their new PPA product. Now, we would never upgrade our existing hsphere cluster to this - but - and as much as we dont like parallels - we will probably launch a new PPA cluster at some point for all new signups and/or for customers that wanted to migrate from our hsphere cluster to this new PPA cluster. Central management and control of clusters of servers across multiple platforms is a very important feature for service providers. You have got to give parallels some credit here. Hsphere was BY FAR the best panel they had, but, their marketing was Plesk centric. What they did is continue to support hsphere, while taking the key components from it, rebranding it as a plesk platform, offering an upgrade path from hsphere to the newly branded PPA platform (ie plesk that works like hsphere) hard to argue with this and will likely maintain us as a customer as a result our own custom hsphere development wont go away - but, for the price, its absurd not to use their new platform vs trying to develop your own from scratch. Our own hsphere development will continue simply to allow business continuity for our customers. Migrations are expensive for everyone and its relatively simple to keep packages and versions up to date on the hsphere platform. No need to mass migrate people and cause issues when its not needed overall, Im pretty impressed with the parallels strategy and execution. There certainly was some lag initially while they tried to integrate all of these platforms they purchased - but, they were smart enough to recognize their best platform (hsphere) and simply improved upon it and rebranded it to their primary plesk brand before relaunching.. kinda brilliant actually

Wow, andrew. That's some great insight into what's really going on. I guess I stand corrected with the *complete* phase out part, but looking forward it will be interesting to see how much traction PPA gets... especially considering the lower adoption rate of hsphere in relation to cpanel as of late.

Hi Trip, nice comments and perspective unfortunately for hsphere - and this is my personal opinion only - Igor sold at the wrong time - a few years too early to Comodo, who then of course turned around and flipped it to parallels in exchange for a Parallels/Comodo integration/standardization contract. I remember back when Comodo sold hsphere to Parallels - we tried to step in and buy the product - but, there was literally not enough money to adequately compensate Comodo for the SSL contract they signed with parallels.. its really too bad, as hsphere could have been HUGE.. its not a simple control panel, it is an automation and delivery platform.. I do need to stress though - and much to my surprise - parallels has handled this properly.. there was a delay (and its too be expected with their mass acquisition strategy) - but, they identified which products and services would bring them value in the future and they built a new product which combined the best features of their purchased brands with their plesk brand and their heavily invested marketing into that brand. cpanel - as much as we like this product and as much as we sell this product - is simply not in the same ball park. I would be very surprised if this is even a conversation a few years from now. cpanel likely doesnt outsell plesk today and I would be shocked if it outsells PPA a few years down the road. But, what cpanel has - and NO ONE can take away from them - is a very large and very loyal niche following. To ignore them would be silly. It is difficult to scale with a platform like cpanel - parallels knows this, and although it took them some time to put it all together, they are absolutely exploiting this

Good to hear that Parallels is putting the Hsphere acquisition to good use. In the past they've always said that the best features of acquired panels were being added to Plesk, but the additions weren't easy to spot to say the least.

Yes, you may ask what CMS are running on each site: wordpress? or some forum, because there expend a lot of memory and maybe depend of your budget you have to think on a VPS or Dedicated server. Or ask for a Reseller Hosting with "cpnginx" installed, fits in the most cases if a budget is low.
