How far can you go on a reseller?

Ive always wondered how far can you go to run a web hosting site on a reseller before having to upgrade to a VPS or dedi?

I really think that all depends upon the company or service you obtain hosting from.

There really is no limit as such. I think one of the reasons to shift would be wanting more control.

If you had Jailed SSH access with the Reseller account you could just keep checking the top 3 or 5 high usage users and ask them to upgrade to a VPS. You could keep hosting the low usage accounts on the Reseller account. So basically you can host as many as you can until CPU/memory goes a little high and then ask users to upgrade to a VPS. You could only do that for so long though as it'd be unfair after awhile otherwise. Eventually, you'll get a good amount of clients on the Reseller account and will be making enough to upgrade to a VPS. Then you can do the same again, only this time you'll go from VPS to Dedicated. But like BeZazz mentioned above, some prefer more control and would rather go for Dedicated Server in the first place. That is what I did. It depends on your budget and the level of control and profit margins your after, etc.

It depends on your needs. If all your clients just need simple shared accounts a reseller is fine. I had to upgrade because I needed to control my services for clients such as installing custom PERL scripts among other things. The answer really relies on your needs.

You should upgrade to VPS/server when you make some profit from the reseller account. Some prefer not using VPS/server but getting multiple reseller packages so they don't have to deal with technical issues.

There's also overhead with both VPS and a dedicated server, so it often makes more sense to wait and keep on using reseller accounts until you have enough customers to fill a server. IMHO, a small VPS (from a reputable provider) is unlikely to be cost effective enough to switch to as a reseller.

1 Here Back when I was a reseller, I had 4 reseller accounts with 4 different providers in order to allow this growth. It also had the advantage of spreading customers out across multiple physical locations in the event of an outage

You can measure it with many factors: - Compare a reseller hosting account vs. dedicated server price for nearly the same features. - If your customers reach a number that consumes the resources of the shared server of your reseller package you should move dedicated to avoid suspension. - Finally I personally believe if you reach 100 active customer accounts under your reseller package you should move dedicated to save money and have better hardware resources. Hope that helps.

No doubt, most of us do the same because in the beginning of a webhosting business, it is difficult to bear the cost of VPS or dedicated server. Moreover, beginners can't manage VPS or dedicated. So, when a beginner has learned something, he goes ahead.

If you outgrow your reseller account and want more access to the server it's important reasons to then think about upgrading.

I agree totally. You can grow with multiple reseller accounts and than when you grow to a point and learn enough for a good dedi, move. There's certainly nothing wrong with multiple resellers, and depending on the price point, and quality, it's usually well worth it.
