Help & Advice on choosing plan and provider

Posted by abintefusion, 07-01-2011, 08:56 AM
Hi All, Need help on deciding the plan and provider for my website needs. Below are the points after reading the form. 1) I design websites for my friends and family 2) I use WordPress as CMS to avoid coding and apply themes to make static websites. 3) Max size the website has grown till now is 500 MB and average 150 MB 4) I am looking for hosting space for 15 websites 5) These are all business or personal websites and targeting specific users. 6) not much of data interaction apart from contact form to be filled/ 7) Need around 2-10 email account per domain 8) All websites need to be optimized for SEO purpose to target niche customers 9) I am not a programmer and dont know much about hardware management so thought of buying reseller account. 10) I dont need billing software or separate CPanel accounts as i will manage them myself. 11) Budget is around 60$ to 100$ annually as i am doing this to help my friends and as my hobby and not charging them anything. 12) After reading forum will prefer LiteSpeed servers 13) Dedicated IP will be good as it would help SEO for the package not for every website. 14) Not looking at overselling facility as dont want to effect SEO 15) Not looking at hosting porn, warez or forum sites. I was about to sign up with MDDhosting after reading the forum but stopped due to addon domain feature. i came to know it has SEO effects if you use addon domain and needs htaccess edit to make it work. i want to host my domains on root folder separately and they are not space consuming as most of them are static. I request you all to help me choose the provider and i also looked into semoweb silver and alpha reseller package. Thanks in anticipation.

Well your requirements are minimal for the budget you have. For $60-100 you can put yourself into almost anything that is going to fit your 500MB requirements. To me it sounds more like you need to find a reliable provider with strong network uptime. I think you'll find a list of places that will work for you. Semoweb - aka Dustin is also very reputable on here and can probably be more than helpful to assist you. Other places I would consider looking at BigBrainHost, LoveVPS (although they are currently down with some domain issues), Hoopla Hosting, and searching the advertising section for other well known hosts. Sorry to hear you changed your mind about MDD - Mike is a good guy as well. You could also try HostV or Cirtex for your needs.

You are welcome to set your add-on domains outside of the public_html, and no matter what cPanel provider you use - there will be a subdomain on the primary domain that represents the add-on domain so this isn't specific to us. A simple .htaccess rule (as you alluded to) would fix this showing up in Google.

Hi Techy, Thanks for your quick reply. Will surely go through your recommendations. Only reason i dropped MDDhosting was due to pricing as shared hosting with addon had effect on SEO and reseller package of 240$ annually was out of my budget. Even if i would have gone for 1 year discount i will land in changing provider next year which i dont want to. As i stated earlier i am not programmer and do this as hobby so dont want keep struggling or changing providers every day. Thanks again for your help. incase u remember some more options that will be great even if something like Managed VPS with sql and php with 5 gb space will do i guess.

Without WHMCS (if you're just going to use it for your own accounts you don't need it) you can get $114/year off or $9.50/mo off recurring. You wouldn't however be able to use any other coupon codes. This is why it's always a good idea to contact a provider's sales department if their products don't exactly fit your needs because many times they can work with you, if you ask.

Your overall expectation is good but do allow me to comment on some points:- Since you do not want an Addon Domain setup, you should get a reseller account that has access to WHM and setup separate cPanel accounts for each domains. Many hosting providers will bundle a billing system like ClientExec or WHMCS with their reseller plans and the cost of the billing system is already included in the reseller plans so it is not actually "free". You may want to contact them to see whether these can be removed and have the price is reduced. Normally you can only obtain a dedicated IP if you need to install a SSL certificate, as SEO is not a proper justification as per ARIN rulings especially in view of the depletion of IPv4 worldwide. In this case I will suggest you to avoid those "master reseller" and "alpha reseller" type of plans and stick to basic reseller hosting which should be fine for your needs.

Hi James, thanks for your clarification and guidance. Its really helpful of you to provide insight and clarify the myths i had. One of the website might require SSL but i dont have knowledge on that so i guess i need to pass on that. Secondly i dont even need private name servers as its me who is managing them and not selling on web or rebranding them. Will keep your points in mind.

Hi Mike, Just a clarity for my knowledge for my need which plan will be fine shared or reseller as i am managing them myself and only thing which forced me to change from shared to reseller was addon domain function as i wanted to avoid using them knowing the SEO requirements.

Posted by MikeDVB, 07-01-2011, 09:43 AM
If you want a separate cPanel account for each, you would need a reseller account. If you don't mind using a single cPanel account with add-on domains, you would be fine on shared. The decision is up to you. Honestly there are no SEO repercussions unless you make a habit of providing Google with sitemaps that include those subdomains or you visit them yourself and then navigate to Google there after... Otherwise there is no way for Google to find out about it. Beyond that, if you set a permanent redirect from the subdomain to the actual domain, Google will *NOT* list the subdomain even if it does discover it. You are obviously welcome to believe whatever SEO "information" you wish, I'm not here to change your mind. Best of luck to you, whatever route you choose.

No problem. Private nameservers are normally included free of charge but the provider should also allow you to use their nameservers without the need to go through the hassle of setting the private nameservers.

Honestly if you plan on setting up 15 websites using various CMS, the best route would be to set-up a reseller account so you have access to WHM (that way you can set-up separate cpanel accounts for each domain name). One thing to keep in mind about add-on domain names is that in general most web hosting providers combine CPU usage per user as opposed to per domain name. So you are more likely to hit CPU limits by having all of your websites attached as addon domain names to one account. Also, if you ever decide to separate your accounts into separate cpanel accounts, it can be somewhat of a headache if you have everything merged into one cpanel account. Just my two cents PS. Be cautious of oversellers, especially if your focus is on diskspace. Companies will often times use high diskspace numbers or even claim to offer you unlimited diskspace to lure you into using thier services when in fact you are not getting anywhere near close to the Diskspace being advertised. Just do a search on google for "My web hosting account got suspended for using to many resources" and you will see what I am talking about.

Why in almost everyone of your threads do you bash the word "overselling" seriously its becoming boring... You hit CPU/RAM limits well before hitting any serious diskspace capacity...

Posted by Forward Web, 07-01-2011, 11:35 PM
My point exactly. But i think the whole its not about overselling, its how you "manage" your servers argument has become even more boring

Posted by abintefusion, 07-02-2011, 02:27 AM
Hi FernGullyGraphics, Your points are bang on target and this helps me decide why i should go with reseller plan as i am still experimenting with other CMS run website and settled with WordPress for time being and have limited knowledge on back end. My whole target is to get good SEO for them so it can help them. All these friends cannot afford websites and have no knowledge. i am buying the domain and hosting space. then will sit with them and make SEO content. I am not planning to overuse hosting provider resources as my websites will in turn get effected. Its like keep it simple silly.

Posted by Forward Web, 07-02-2011, 02:37 AM
Always seems to be the best approach

Spot on.

Sometimes god has its own way of guiding us. I will not name the host but I went to signup and while doing the payment the site went down. It was clear indication for me to stay away. My Final decision is between MDDhosting and Crocweb. Only differentiator is pricing. I have read very nice reviews about MDD, but went around not much for Crocweb. Any suggestions which can help.

Sure it wasn't just a local issue with your own ISP.

Posted by abintefusion, 07-02-2011, 02:15 PM
Lol, i managed to PM the host provider and post it here in that time frame. Surely something wrong with my ISP end.

Just bad timing.

MDD is a class act....great servers as well. You can do a speed test with UK Bike Forum

Finally after 3 days of research i have signed up with MDDhosting. Thanks Mike for a product you have developed which is well balanced quality, quality & pricing. Wish you all the best and hope more host providers introduce plans for webmasters. Thanks to everyone who kept this answering and guiding me through this thread. Wish to come back for new guidance.
