Need Reseller Recommendations

Posted by fshagan, 01-05-2011, 01:39 AM
I've been with my current reseller host for a few years now, but recently the server has become crowded. So even though the service has been stable, I'm looking for a new home. My new home will need to be able to handle my 28 accounts, most under 150MB disk each, with few of them using more than about 8GB of bandwidth each month. Most are in the 2 - 3 GB per month My largest site has a forum with 64,450 posts, and trying to convert it from SMF to IP.Board was impossible. My host had to block my IP address. We straightened that out, and I took another tack. I installed SMF on my laptop, exported the database, imported it, installed IP.Board locally, converted, then uploaded IP.Board and tried to import the 17MB SQL file to build the database. Brought the server to its knees. So I need a reseller plan with a solid host that can handle something like that occasionally. I'm looking at DimeHost right now, but would like recommendations from customers of other hosts offering reseller plans that I can look at. Linux servers, with WHM/Cpanel, PHP 5, and MySQL is a must, of course. I'll even consider VPS solutions but they have to meet my budget. Any other hosts I can check out?

I've never heard of DimeHost... Who is your current provider out of curiosity? A 17MB SQL import really shouldn't bring a server to it's knees.

Posted by fshagan, 01-05-2011, 02:06 AM
Sorry, my dyslexia strikes again. Its HostDime that I'm looking at right now (I PM'd Manny here to see if his servers can handle a SQL import like that). I'd rather not say who I'm with right now, as they have been a solid, reliable host until this point. I think I'm just outgrowing them. I may keep the rest of my accounts there, reduce the account to the minimum, and just move my larger sites over to a new host at first. The static HTML sites don't seem to have any problem, and running Wordpress seems OK. But they can't seem to handle this certain MySQL process (its many small records in the forum, so I think its more a matter of number of transactions rather than size). He said the load was up to 25% during the import.

Any host should be able to easily handle a 17MB SQL import, TBH... I've heard some good things about HostDime but it's been a while.

Take a serious look at MDDHosting (I'm going on reviews and reputation here at WHT, for instance: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showth...ght=mddhosting) Good luck, Rick

It's a good idea that you have already PM'd HostDime directly to see if they can help you. You may also consider contacting other reseller hosts too, and compare their responses. Remember to indicate to them your budget All the best

I'm currently with HawkHost. They allow their resellers to oversell.

Posted by Twolance, 01-05-2011, 06:05 AM
I recommend Preston host

Posted by 5wayshost, 01-05-2011, 06:15 AM
I recommend Innohosting

Posted by @Matt, 01-05-2011, 06:57 AM
What type of budget did you have for your new host?

Posted by technut, 01-05-2011, 10:47 PM
Our first question to you is why has your provider not recommended a move to a server that has the ability to handle your hosting needs if as you say the one you are currently using can not? Our second question would be why cant the server you are on handle your needs unless it is a shared oversold server of low resources? Have you given your current provider a chance to make it right.... as you said "they have been a solid, reliable host until this point" and things change, hosting needs change, bandwidth needs change. So maybe your account needs a new server. We suggest (if you haven't already) bring your current host into the loop, that is unless there is some other driving factor you want to move on. PS, we highly recommend DimeHost..... I mean HostDime. Just kidding!(smile) Regards.

By just taking a brief glance at your post and replies I have not seen a budget mentioned. Perhaps if you would supply your budget we could help out a bit more!

Posted by HostDime, 01-06-2011, 08:12 AM
I just responded to your PM now Please let us know if you have any further questions we can assist with during your search for a new reseller.

Hostdime are a very good company, and as already recommended, take a look at MDDHosting as well. You won't go wrong with either of those!

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 01-06-2011, 01:58 PM
I've uploaded SQL files 5x that size with BlueHost, heh.

Thanks, everyone! Great comments and suggestions. I didn't mention a budget because it was a range, from $20 to $50, depending on package. I was paying $27 a month for 8G disk and 180G bandwidth, and I was willing to pay that price because, until the last year, the server was rock solid and very fast. A reverse IP search showed the server only had about 200 sites hosted on it until recently. Now it has over 2,000. I know the reverse IP tools are not 100% accurate, but it does give a ball-park estimate. I went with HostDime's sister company, Surpass Hosting, and will test them out this month. MDD Hosting was the runner up as Mike seems very responsive too. Most of my customers are in the southeast, so Surpass' servers in Orlando may have a speed benefit for them over the old data center in Dallas. My current provider does not offer a VPS or dedicated solution, so there's a lack of growth potential there as well. But, that being said, I may downgrade that account to his smallest offering and keep both accounts, with my support site on the smaller account.

Posted by ItsJustHosting, 01-08-2011, 02:39 PM
At $50/month a VPS would be the way to go, you can find quite a few managed options in that range. However if you don't need the power and resources yet, a lower priced reseller would work. Either way your budget covers a range of options. Keep us updated on your experience with Surpass!

Even though you might have already found a potential provider, I still recommend taking a look at the Reseller Hosting offers section, there are many active hosts with WHT Reps that post there, and usually you can find a pretty awesome deal as well! I provided a link below for your convenience! http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=130

I think a VPS or dedicated is my next step. Because neither is offered at my current host, changing to one that does have room for growth is important to me. So far, so good, although the server seems a bit slow this AM.

Posted by fshagan, 01-10-2011, 12:46 PM
Well, I'm less than enthusiastic about SurpassHosting today. Over the weekend the server I'm on, Pass36, seemed to be having problems. When I first signed up, the response times were about twice as fast as my current host, but now they are twice as slow, as tested by loadimpact. My sites are down this morning, according to the monitoring services I use. I can't reach the help desk, or the forums there, so maybe its a line cut between where I am and where they are. Not a good beginning, that's for sure.

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 01-10-2011, 01:47 PM
Try running a tracert from command prompt: Also see if your site loads via a proxy site like hidemyass.com. If it loads via a proxy site like hidemyass.com then it must an issue with your connection at home or a local issue with your ISP.

Posted by fshagan, 01-10-2011, 02:53 PM
Its back up now. I use three monitoring services, and they all showed the sites on that server not responding (checking from San Francisco, London and NY): I'm not sure how long the sites were down, but the performance of the server over the weekend was worse than my prior host. I think its time for a VPS. Last edited by fshagan; 01-10-2011 at 02:56 PM.

If your budget is in that range, than I would suggest you move to a VPS. There is no reason to be on a shared host. - Daniel

Posted by HostXNow_Chris, 01-10-2011, 09:28 PM
Or find a better provider.

Posted by XeHSean, 01-11-2011, 12:20 AM
Agreed - the OP should be fine with a reliable reseller plan from a reputable provider. Further, the OP should choose a provider that offers VPSs and dedicated servers so that it is possible for the OP to upgrade his solution in the future if needed

Posted by TBradley, 01-11-2011, 01:03 AM
The fact that you have been with Surpass for a small amount of time and they are already having problems is a bit scary, IMHO. Their parent company HostDime has some respect here, nonetheless I might consider alternatives. :/

Posted by dezinerstudio, 01-11-2011, 01:31 AM
Hostdime surely would be a good choice, however you can check many other companies in hosting offers section .

Posted by philtrix, 01-11-2011, 06:03 AM
I would highly recommend http://www.rshosting.com here while looking at the op's requirements and with the fact in mind, that he would prefer a reliable reseller who have an upgrade scale to meet the requirements of their customers account expansion.

Posted by fshagan, 01-12-2011, 05:52 PM
They had an issue with scheduled maintenance in their data center that brought several of their servers down. Probably just bad timing for both of us, but in light of the slow response over the weekend, it just seemed like it wasn't a good fit. The fact that I'm on the west coast, and they are on the east coast probably didn't help. To their credit, they have been very nice and have promised a credit under the 30-day guarantee. So I'm getting a fully managed VPS provisioned today from a host in the mid-west, and hoping to get things moving here in the next couple of days.

Posted by TBradley, 01-12-2011, 08:12 PM
Awesome, I'm happy to see it turned out alright for you!

Posted by Tropical Tundra, 01-13-2011, 09:13 PM
I've been using Surpass Host for 8 years now. I think that's 100 years in Internet time. I have their bronze re-seller account. They've always done a great job. They sent out notice about scheduled downtime I believe for this week. Can't remember the details. But they've done a great job hosting over the years. I use a couple other hosts so my sites aren't all with one company but been with them the longest, no complaints.

didn see any one recomended reseller zoom, so far their price should be suitable to u the budget reseller plan look very attractive to me... so far you have any comment on their service?

Posted by ibee, 01-14-2011, 02:47 AM
Try Hostgator, they are the best linux reseller hosting providers

Posted by fshagan, 01-14-2011, 11:55 AM
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I think I have found a new home with Mike from MDDHosting. I chose to go with a fully managed VPS from him, and after seeing the load my forum conversion put on the system while importing 62k posts and 7000+ images, I'm glad I went with a VPS. It gives me a lot more "headroom" for those processor and memory intensive tasks.

Posted by privatehoster, 01-14-2011, 08:38 PM
do share with us after you use for some time.. i plan to go for VPS soon

Posted by fshagan, 01-15-2011, 01:34 PM
So far I'm very happy. I love being able to transfer the accounts myself. I think I would be lost without a "fully managed VPS", as there are a lot of settings I never saw in my reseller account.

Posted by tmrsk, 01-15-2011, 08:55 PM
I recommend too. Very good support, stable host etc...

Posted by ezyvps, 01-16-2011, 12:30 AM
Just curious if you currently have private nameservers? How would one resell with two different companies at the same time? Would the sites you move need new nameservers? Good luck with your solution, Jxff

Posted by fshagan, 01-16-2011, 01:53 AM
I do have two sets of private nameservers under two domains, but I understand what you mean. I would have to maintain them both, and it might get confusing. Right now, I have all four name servers pointed to the new VPS account. All the accounts are moved. And except for some CHMOD issues on one account, and some PHP "function deprecated" error messages on some sites, everything went well. I have two weeks until the next billing cycle on the old account, so if all goes well this next week, I'll go ahead and pull the plug on it.

That is great news MDDHosting has been getting good reputation all the time. What plan did you get with them (price, diskspace, and bandwidth)? Do you need to know Linux to use the fully mananged Linux? How is support?

Posted by mrgeekchris, 01-16-2011, 04:34 AM
Hostgator if I am not mistaken they include whmcs free if you are selling hosting and they have bunch of additional perks

Posted by fshagan, 01-16-2011, 06:16 AM
I got their Basic VPS with 15GB disk, 1 GB RAM and 1,800GB bandwidth (now back to 900GB). Month to month was $29.50 with the first three months at 50% off with the coupon code in the VPS Offers forum here on WHT. I think the pricing has gone up since I signed up. I offer fully managed hosting to a few customers and host my own sites, so this works for me. I'm more interested in stability and service than I am tons of disk space. There were cheaper plans with more disk and bandwidth, but the RAM was important to me also; I wanted at least 1GB. I was attracted to them because of the reviews here and the fact that the VPS was fully managed, they provide daily off-server backups and Cpanel/WHM were included in the price. They offer free WHMCS with their shared reseller plans, but its a $10 a month add-on with the VPS. I'm still considering that (I may go for a purchased license). I'm not sure its an expense I need to incur because of the niche I'm selling in (small business, hobbyist and bloggers). They will take care of everything as far as the server goes; I do a lot through Cpanel / WHM that I could have them do, like transfer the accounts over, etc. And I do some things via SSH at the root level but I don't have to do that. I felt safer with "fully managed" at this time.

How about Hostgator Reseller Packages, has anyone tried it?

Posted by chems, 01-18-2011, 01:46 PM
i suggest you to go with stable company with best service for ever

Posted by Jerrick, 01-19-2011, 04:36 AM
If you target that you can sell lot of hosting . You should buy more reseller packages. The more you buy , you get more discount . In other hand, you allow to sell cheaper price to your customers after get the promotion from the web hosting provider.

I recommend GoFindUs.com from $5 a month.

Posted by NAC, 02-21-2011, 04:34 AM
at start it looks ok. but lately looks like they have no support at all! he wait for ticket more then few days and no answer. i am trying few days to solve problems that support could solve in 2 minutes. but now almost a week with no respond to ticket.

Posted by mahi, 02-21-2011, 09:56 AM
DONT Go with them.... I bought a product from them.. and opened a ticket .. 24+hrs NO REPLY!! Contacted through chat .. they are not able to support for technical issue !!

Posted by praboy, 02-22-2011, 09:47 AM
1 for MDDHosting

Posted by WebResearcher1, 04-22-2011, 04:32 PM
That's sad that mahi had a bad experience with Surpass. Surpass has been my host for many years (Silver reseller package) and I've always gotten a quick response from their support staff. Surpass will remain my #1 recommendation!

Posted by DakNet, 04-22-2011, 07:22 PM
SemoWeb is very good for its price ($3.50/month)

Posted by privatehoster, 04-22-2011, 11:41 PM
I saw the price is very attractive... how many cpanel account can open for that package? Never mention on their website

Posted by Dustin B Cisneros, 04-22-2011, 11:46 PM
Hello, Thanks for the question so I'm here to clarify, we actually allow unlimited amounts of sites hosted on that package @DakNet Thank you for the recommendation.

Posted by M Bacon, 04-23-2011, 12:04 AM
You could try Inno Hosting. I had great hosting when I was with them.

Posted by privatehoster, 04-23-2011, 12:43 AM
I do understand it able to host unlimited domain, but how many cpanel account allow me to create and sell to my customer?

Posted by Dustin B Cisneros, 04-23-2011, 01:13 AM
Hello, There is no hard limit for cPanel accounts you can create unlimited cPanel accounts as well. Take in mind this will differ on your packages you wish to create and if you decide to over sell etc how ever on our end there's no hard limit.

I recommend mellowhost, semoweb, and surpasshosting
