Why there are some web hosting company that is offering a reseller account gives out an unlimited bandwidth while others limits it. Truly unlimited bandwidth (just like unlimited disk-space) doesn't exist, no. It's a marketing gimmic, or whatever else you want to call it.

I see it as a selling point for the companies that offer it. But we all know there is no such thing as unlimited.

I wouldn't call it a "scam" - it's just a marketing gimmick - some legit hosts would let you use a ton of bandwidth but you are limited in so many other ways that it can get impossible to use the amount of bandwidth other hosting providers with real limits would allow you to use. But in reality, you're capped at one point or another, even on a 100mbps unmetered dedicated port. You'll get capped at around 33tb of bandwidth usage for the month.

Eronkid, check the terms and conditions for cpu usage, bandwidth usage and the types of sites you are not allowed to host.

A lot of hosts are in a position where they really don't care about data transfer usage levels (less true about disk space). All hosts do care about CPU, memory, i/o usage levels though. Typically, anything that precludes them from maintaining the number of customers per server that they deems to be profitable, is a potential candidate for suspension and termination. In return, this simply means that you can only expect to get what you pay for, especially when it comes to cpu or memory or i/o, with the added note that you're not able to see how much of each you're using, momentarily or over a period of time. A rather hard situation for any reseller trying to write a rigorous business plan that will stand the test of time.

I don't know, it depends on what your provider defines as unlimited. You can ask them, can my customers host videos off their account? Or can I provide Free podcast service off the server? That would get them to cough off the real deal about their unlimited b/w policy.

Even a blank cheque will have limited space for you to write the amount that you wanted to write.

Actually they should call it un-metered but no unlimited. As for their hostings they can add more disk on their server and it became un-metered.

With unlimited bandwidth, your only cap is the port speed.

Unlimited offer doesn't really always mean scam. In computer, what increases the price of a server these days are the cpu and the RAM. As days passing on, people are getting more concerned about CPU and RAM rather than space and bandwidth.

If really offering unlimited bandwidth and so on. what would happen to a Dedicated Server? Since basic package nowadays could have unlimited space unlimited bandwidth.
