Recommendation for Linux reseller package involving multiple servers

Posted by praveen, 09-15-2009, 08:44 AM
Hi friends, I am looking for a reseller plan (cpanel / whm) with option to add sites on different servers. The main idea is to reduce the risk of single point of failure for all the websites. On research, I found out that Host nine reseller package provide this facility where we can select the server while adding the site. I would like to know any other provider, who has similar facility to add sites on multiple servers? Also I would like to know your opinion on Hostnine package. Thanks in advance for your time.

Look at failover plans of Resellerzoom, too.

You ARE looking for H-Sphere providers Forget Cpanel

Yes, go with HSphere as they come out of the box with this feature. Good luck!

I would also say take a look at H-Sphere providers. You typically cannot choose which server the account/domains go on though. In HSphere the host typically turns off this server for new accts/domains and turns on the new server(s) as they are added to the cluster. It really all depends on how fast the host is growing and the timeframe between adding accts etc. Same goes for database and email servers.

I think resellerzoom does this... I never liked them after they where sold but they still kept the almost 100% uptime when i was with them even after the new owners.

I would simply contact a provider and see if you could have a few smaller reseller plans on a few servers instead of one big one on a single server or maybe you could sign up for two and request that they be on different servers

Whats wrong with cPanel??

It's just that cPanel doesn't have the feature where you're able to select servers in the control panel. It's still doable if the provider has multiple servers in multiple locations though. Nothing's wrong with cPanel imo.

Nothing is "wrong" with cpanel.. it just does not typically accommodate this users requirements. If you want to spread accounts across multiple servers, the hsphere or even plesk is probably what you should be looking at...

IMHO stay away from Plesk ... it's synonymous with junk.

LOL I have the same opinion regarding Plesk. They wrote it but now do not know how to deal with all this ... stuff. It is very buggy and unstable. Unfortunately H-Sphere is going to go this "dead development cycle" as well... They are going to close the development and support office they had in Eastern Europe and move it to ... Plesk developers That's s..t...

Sorry copout, this isnt exactly accurate... I have been hearing on these forums (mostly from cpanel hosts), that hsphere is "dead development cycle" for 7 years. Honest to goodness, this is getting tiring (not aimed at you in certain).. I know many providers like to throw doubt around hsphere as a panel - and the reasons are obvious for this... Yes, parallels is consolidating their development environments. and Yes, they are closing their Eastern European center. But, the main hsphere developers have been kept and integrated with plesk developers, etc.. the development of hsphere continues and will continue. It is also very interesting to see the amount of key and core features from hsphere that have made it into plesk and plesk expand. I imagine these platforms will merge down the road, but, that is the worst case scenario - and really, it is not a bad scenario. Re Plesk in certain, it has come A LONG WAY. Adding in the clustering fundamentals from hsphere, the capability to automate clustering and account allocation via server groups, across multiple platforms, etc are ALL VERY POSITIVE forward moves for Plesk. We have been watching its development closely. It is not quite to where hsphere is yet, and as you have said, the latest and greatest functionality is a little buggy still. I imagine by the next release or 2 they will have all of this worked out and that is likely when we will jump on board. I am not the biggest fan of parallels. They can be difficult to work with, etc.. but, they have continued to develop and improve hsphere and they are really moving forward in a positive manner with Plesk. Ultimately, these 2 platforms will be merged (probably 3-6 years down the road at the soonest) - and that is a good thing I think...

Not necessarily for the industry as a whole though. Having more independent and reasonably successful control panel developers would have been a better thing IMHO.

Hi Dan... do not get me wrong, I completely agree with this statement.. however, it is what it is.. and until more viable solutions surface.. what Parallels is doing with hsphere and plesk are both very positive... capitalism at its best.. nothing is stopping competition and nothing stops a company from buying their competition.. I would have liked this to play out differently, and I assume competitors will continue to surface.. it has already started to happen.. interworx, dotnetpanel, hostingcontroller have all entered and expanded their market with various clustering and automation platforms.. for now though, in this space, hsphere and plesk are the best available - at least in my opinion..

Hi Andrew, You are right and H-Sphere were developed for last two years after the acquisition. It was like convulsions but it was. They left only a few developers from old team and support two years ago. But now the native developers will be fired just to the street and support as well. They are going to move H-Sphere support and developing to team that didn't see it at all I like H-Sphere and their growing during past 8 years but dislike their behavior for the last two. It seems that H-Sphere will not be in developing stage anymore but just some minor bugfixing (of course if they will be able to do it). Plesk could being the good control panel, but its architecture is ugly and this is the main problem. It won't allow them to develop it and make good product... In my opinion, of course

Hi copout.. I certainly understand some of your concerns.. however, it is not fair to say that hsphere is not developing.. Under parallels watch, they have released some very important new features (including apache2 support, php version AND mode select, jailed SSH, ROR, etc, etc, etc).. I would guess that Exchange and Sharepoint support will likely never be upgraded to more modern versions (as parallels would likely prefer to sell their very profitable solutions for this)... they are adding their sitebuilder and virtuozzo into v3.3 (still in beta), and seems they are upgrading Windows and MSSQL to 2008 in the near future.. this, along with continued bug fixes, etc.. I cannot complain at all.. Would I prefer if another company owned hsphere and they were a real competitive product to plesk? well, of course - competition drives innovation.. but, on the whole, they are doing a better job then I originally thought they would.. as for the developers, honestly, the key people have been maintained.. I am not sure what I think yet of closing the original development center. I have gotten to know several people from that office over the years, and they are very skilled, talented and pleasant to work with. It is sad to see them close that office. However, business is business and I am sure there are valid business reasons for consolidating their development teams. I hope everyone in that office that is closing is able to find new employment quickly. They are very talented and very friendly people - I wish them all the best...
