Does changing my domain's name servers affect email?

Posted by Hopes, 07-19-2013, 07:32 AM
Hi everyone. I am new to web hosting and require some help. This is my scenario: I purchased my domain name (say mydomain.com)and DNS services from a provider and then configured this to use Gmail for domain email. Also, I redirected the website to another existing URL. Lately, I purchased web hosting from the same provider and was given instructions to change my name servers. I want to prevent my visitors from being forwarded to another URL and view the pages that I host using the new hosting service. However, I need to keep using the Gmail service for my domain email. Could anyone tell me how to achieve this? Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated.

Your new hosting provider should have a way for you to configure DNS to use Gmail. Ask them about it. That will need to be set up before you change the nameservers.

You will have to login to the hosting control panel of your hosting provider and change MX records in order to point them to Gmail. if you do not have any idea how to do this then i would suggest you to contact your hosting provider to set the MX records for you.

Thank you for the replies. My MX records are already set to access Gmail and I am using it. However, when I change my name server to the new servers that my new hosting provides, will it affect my email access on Gmail?

Already answered and explained. Yes. Well you can still get to Gmail regardless but your email for your domain will stop going to Gmail if you don't set it up at your host before changing nameservers. Last edited by DominionHosting; 07-19-2013 at 02:36 PM. Reason: Clarification

Changing name servers to another host absolutely will effect email. When you switch to another host, and are pointing your domain to their name servers, you're effectively placing the new company in charge of handling the DNS via their hosting platform. You receive a new DNS zone file from the provider. The zone assumes that mail will be handled locally, i.e., the new server or your domain name, and doesn't know that you want it handled by Google instead. This is an easy fix on the part of your host. All they need to do is change the primary MX (mail exchange record) from your domain name, to ASPMX01.GOOGLE.COM and add the secondary and tertiary records. The change can be done by the host in about 3 minutes, and after some time to allow for DNS propagation (duration needed for the changes to take effect) and you're back in good shape.

When you said you purchased a web hosting from the same company, was that for a different domain name?
