Domain for reseller signup?

Posted by Patr100, 10-10-2007, 06:06 PM
When I've looked at some Reseller plans - for signing up I seem to remember they ask for it to be necessary a domain to be associated in some way with the account. I have a couple already for other purposes but I might need to think of a more appropriate name for one if it became a public part of my reselling, although I haven't decided if I will trade under my own name or another. How does this associated domain on signing up work in practice and can it be changed easily once a reseller account is up and running? -

Acctualy it shouldn't matter if u can use alternative NS's ... But keep in mind that in most cases (I guess 100%) u will not be able to change the account domain and if u will need to use it (As an email account or other ...) u might want to think a bit before u choose an un fit name ...

I would say the exact process would depend on what control panel your reseller host would be using. Do you know what control panel your potential host/s might be using?

Most likely Cpanel.

cPanel hosts can change a reseller's username and/or domain name, but it is a time-consuming process. Basicly, they have change ownership of all your resold accounts temporarily, revoke reseller priveleges, make the changes, and change ownership of all your accounts back to your reseller domain. Its a pain, but it can be done. You might want to ask your host before you sign up whether or not they would be willing to make a change later on, if needed.

i know with cpanel you can not change the master domain, however i know with Helm control panel you can add/remove the domain names. I haven't used any other control panel's to confirm if any others work like Helm.

Thanks for replies. So it sounds like it's best to settle on a suitable domain before I sign up.

Actually you CAN change the master domain with cPanel, as noted above. I've done it several times, as recently as a week ago, using the process outlined above.

So if you have the option of personal nameservers then is the master domain applied to those for clients use - or is it also a necessary arrangement for the reseller provider to configure their resources to us regardless of whether personal name servers or generic ones are used?

Most reseller providers give you the option of using either your personal nameservers, or anonymous nameservers. Both sets will be active at any given time. It is fairly easy to change the personal nameservers you are using with cPanel hosts. The difficult part is contacting your clients and having them update all of their domains, which is something you would have to handle.

Just a thought, could I use a subdomain of a domain I already own say call it www.web.mydomain.com ? - it's certainly not the minor cost of another domain that is the issue , it's just that I can't think of a suitable other one I would like to use at the moment.
