ResellerZoom review: the first 4 months

Posted by tamlyn, 07-24-2007, 10:29 AM
Here are my impressions of the ResellerZoom.com UK-1 reseller hosting plan. SUMMARY: Good support, poor server reliability. FULL VERSION: The price is very competitive, the server spec is decent and the support staff are very accommodating in allowing customisations. They even allowed me to run some custom executable programs (required by an ecommerce solution I was using) and allowed me to completely customise my php.ini (since PHP runs as CGI). In fact the support as a whole is generally very good. Judging by the support staff names, it is outsourced to India but notwithstanding the occasional minor grammatical error, I have found the speed, friendliness and competence of the support staff to be excellent. HOWEVER, I have had many problems with the reliability of the London server (london.nswebhost.com). Frequently I have found that the server becomes completely inaccessible for periods of between 1 and 5 minutes. I don't mean slow, I mean completely gone: no response on http, ping, ftp, ssh, whm.... nothing. And it's not my connection because I tried sshing into a different server and pinging from there with the same (lack of) response. It has also been observed by some of my hosting clients. Support have been unable to advise me what is causing this even when supplied with the precise times at which it has occurred. The frequency with which I have observed it (about 15 times in four months) leads me to believe that it happens at least once a day and probably more often (given that I don't spend every minute of every day accessing the site). One of my clients uses a web based backend for tracking orders (both web and phone) in his shop and is thus *very* reliant on the availability of the site. He has been very understanding thus far but if this issue cannot be resolved soon I am going to have to move host (which is a pain I'd rather not have to go through again). PS this has nothing to do with the recent london server IP change. The problem existed before and has persisted since.

I'll agree with both your pros and cons there. The support staff is amazing at what they do, but their budget servers are very shakey. I've been using resellerzoom for at least 2 years now, and there are periods of several minutes each day where it is like someone just tripped over the server in their datacenter and had to replug in the wires.

Thanks for posting that review, I'm sure others will find it handy. Let us know what happens, if you stay with them or move to another host and if so which one and why you decided on them.

I've never ever had a problem with them. Been there for 3 months, not one downtime. Advanced servers, brilliant package. The only reason I moved was because we didn't need the end-user support and could get a better unsupported deal elsewhere.

For more precise conclusions: host-tracker.com; unialert.com I was under the impression that their UK servers are not classed in their "budget" section.

Posted by JordanSS, 07-24-2007, 05:31 PM
It's not. They have: 1. Budget in US 2. Advanced in US 3. Failover in US 4. UK in ... well... UK If you don't like London why don't you ask for a move? They have more then 1 server in UK.

Sorry to hear you're having problems, I'm surprised RZ would have a server with so many problems.

ditto.... i've an account with them for testing stuff and am happy enough with it for what i use it for...however if i had client accounts on it then i'd most likely move owm

Thanks for the suggestion, I may try that. I currently have a ticket open with the admins and am hoping they can suggest something. As for budget/advanced, the UK servers are the same spec as the Advanced package so I think it's fair to say they're not 'budget' as such. Unfortunately failover is not available in the UK and I find US servers too slow, especially for extended ssh use. I'll keep this thread updated on progress.

Can I have your ticket# or if there is open ticket, ask to escalate with admins (level-2) to check into this. To give quick suggestion I would ask you to surf your site for some hours or 1 day with http://opendns.com nameservers and if the situation dramatically improves you can have that as hint with routing from your ISP to server problem. still I will recommend you to get ticket with admins about this.

Ticket #1049199 has already been escalated to the admins. We're trying to work out what's going on. But, for the nth time, the problem is NOT that the site is slow. The problem is that the site is GONE for up to 5 minutes. And this has been observed simultaneously by myself and one of my clients who uses a different ISP. As I understand it that means it is not a problem with my connection.

Hi, this exactly happens to me but in my vps with another provider in the us, and as far I investigated this is due to my router. I found that everyday, once it is turned on for 2 hours and a little mins, it loose the connection to my vps and only to that certain vps, other systems work fine. You may want to monitor that. However, I'm sure your reseller is fine, in my case my vps is fine coz pingdom never alert about a downtime, so it is my end or my providers end fault. I hope this helps!. Let me know if you find anything about your issue, it may help me too!. Greetings.

BTW Budget B1 Plans will have their price increased, 40% starting in October. And will move the servers to atlantanap, it is bad to hear that cause the NAC network is much more reliable. (also if you had an included ip in the nac server, you won't have one in atlantanap and will be in the shared ip) Cheers

Resellerzoom is good company.

Had similar issues with a different reseller company in London. My suspicion has long been a network connectivity issue with the datacenter itself being unable to cope with some types of data transfer peaks. I wouldn't presume the specifics of the issue are something ResellerZoom can directly address.
