Please suggest reliable reseller hosting

Posted by jpaul, 01-21-2007, 12:30 PM
I am looking 5-10 GB HD, bandwidth 20 GB per month, Linux, php, mysql, qmail - [RESELLER] account - daily backup (for last 7-14 days) - Not to host more then 300 sites /server - Name server facility - 50 domains (I have about 10 active sites, rest parked). - Support email response/resolution within 6 hours. Preferred (not required) - Phone support - IM support - Plesk - RAID/failover - Shell (though doesn't come with PLESK) I am not a reseller but I host 4-5 static sites [10 MB each] for my friends (not for money) - and I guess for this reason - I need to have reseller account, as this scenario will not be accommodated under individual [multi-hosting] plans. My HD space and bandwidth requirement say the rest. I know now days hosting plans are offering 200 GB HD/Bandwidth....but I want reliable hosting provider - who is really committed to offer: - Good Server PERFORMANCE - Availability - Good customer support (if not best) I am thinking to pay $15-30 per month with no setup. Well, I am not interested in VPS and dedicated hosting plan at this time. Please suggest - as I have scan through this WHT and it is not easy to zero down on any hosting company. Thanks. Well, your price and requirements are indeed reasonable. You should be able to find a good provider.. However, I noticed you mentioned Plesk. Is this a requirement? Or do you not have a preference for control panel?

Plesk is not required. Any CP is fine. Thanks. Last edited by jpaul; 01-21-2007 at 12:58 PM.

Start looking at the offers section. - If you like a provider, shoot them an email with presales query. - Try to compare different providers after preparing a shortlist of 3-4 potential hosts. - Search for reviews on some of the sites. Hostjury and whreviews seem to do quite a nice job for a non-partial review. I am sorry, but searching for a host is not a straight forward task.

I recommend Hostdime. They resolve the problems quickly(they generally response the messages within 30 minutes). The uptime is not under %99.5. The connection is fast. The costs are inexpensive. Also they don't allow overselling. But I don't believe what any company is not host more than 300 domains/server

If they are hosting less than 300 domains / server probably a low end server such as a p3 or p4. As the price simply does not work with resellers unlimited domains plans.

Well, 300 domains per server is quite high in a single server environment IMO...but, really depends on the nature of those domains I guess - no real way to have hard numbers like this Many do not offer unlimited domains You have some interesting requirements there - and unfortunately, I think your requirements cross a few different general business models. For example, hosts offering advanced features like multiple backups with multiple restore points (ie 7-14 days worth) typically charge near the higher end of your budget (if not even higher) - as disk space becomes quite expensive when you are speaking scsi, raid, multiple restore point backups, etc... 300 domains per server - well, I think this number can safely vary. For example, a server can have 1000 domains all allocated 10 MB diskspace and 500 MB Transfer without many issues at all. Additionally, you need to actually look at an environment. 300 domains on in a single server environment like cpanel which handles all services (mail, web, control panel, db, dns, etc) - is significantly different then 300 domains in a cluster (ie hsphere, plesk, helm) where that server is only handling web service - and all other services have been offloaded to other nodes in the cluster. Shell access will also be a little tricky for you. The higher end providers typically do not offer it - and I know many will argue that there is no reason not to offer it, etc, etc, etc - however, most higher end reseller providers do not offer it - what alot of providers will do is customize their control panel, or make tools available so that most of the common shell features are found from withint the CP (ie wget, tar/untar, copy/move, chown, etc....)

In order to have better server performance I thought to put a limit of 300 domains (active sites) per server. Otherwise, what do I say to hosting company for PERFORMANCE (minimum ...what)? Moving over from one hosting to another will not be easy - download, upload all domains/emails/mysql, perhaps reconfig htaccess and file permissons, reworking on php scripts to incorporate new file paths (fopen, fclose) after domain propogation and to make sure your emails are still coming in new webmail interface at new home. And after whole exercise one should NOT find that he is landed on oversold and underperforming server. Thats why I thought to put ALL requirements (required and not-required) in my first message, with a hope that to get names of 2-3 hosting providers. Please suggest. Thanks.

so why do you need 5-10 GB HDD when you only use 10 MB per site (and 5 sites?) I don't know about the traffic but it seems the space is way too much and you can reduce your cost in lowering the space. edit:/ and you really don't need a reseller account. You can have an account where you can host more websites and this means you have a lot more to choose from. Last edited by JordanSS; 01-21-2007 at 08:08 PM.

I also host 4-5 domains for my friends and each THAT domain consumes about 10 MB. The point I am trying to make that why I need RESELLER then INDIVIDUAL plan. Many hosting companies offer Individual plan with multi-domain hosting (3 domains through unlimited), that can easily suffice my need. Since I lend space to others (though it is small HD space) I guess I need to have reseller account. In other words, remaining domains consumes more space and I anticipate in next 2 years I might consume about required HD space to be on the safer side.

I cannot vouch for many reseller companies as I can only recommend based on my own experiences. I think you should check out Innohosting. They offer very reasonable reseller plans with end-user support. To me, this is a big plus as it frees you from having to handle your "lended accounts" issues yourself. I have 1 reseller account with Inno seperate from my own hosting business. I keep that account for personal use as the sites on it belong to my friends. Support is CRITICAL. You can do a search to look up good resellers on this WHT. But ultimately, the best way to test out support is to testdrive it yourself. With Innohosting, I typically get responses in under 20mins. And they are usually able to resolve the issue within 1-2 tickets. Hope this helps you. I think it beats giving you a list of 10 companies.

Agreed, having everything in one place with inno is nice. They also have a free trial and stand by their guarantees so giving them a try is well worth it. Robert Davis

You might want to re-consider this requirement: A server with great hardware and a beefy connection can easily handle well over 300 sites. In fact, most web servers in general host more than 300 websites.

I've been developing websites for business since 1996. After years of hosting these sites on several shared hosting accounts I was tired of the headaches from hosting companies. In 2002, I bought my own servers, set them up, and put them in a datacenter not far from home. Everything was good. In 2004, I had a health scare. Doctors told me I had a growth on my liver. After 3 weeks of worry it turned out to be nothing and I had a clean bill of health. However, I looked at things differently after that, especially, how little time I actually spent on myself, family and friends. I decided to slow down and a big part of that was to reduce the amount of time I spent as a programmer and hosting guy. Server maintenance took a great deal of time. I started to investigate reseller hosting. After a couple of months of looking I decided on Kualo.com and I purchased a rOne reseller account. I moved a handful of clients over to them. Within a year, all of my clients were moved. Kualo's reliability and support exceeded all of my expectations. I felt that they provided the same reliablility and support that I would want to extend to my clients. Kualo offers cPanel on their reseller, however if you got a Self-Serv VPS or dedicated you may be able to load Plesk. They are a bit more than what you have listed for prices, however, I don't mind paying extra for the ease of mind I get with Kualo. Sorry that this post was a bit winded. Just my view of things. Best, Brian
