Varhosting.net refugee needs help finding new host

Posted by griz_fan, 11-29-2006, 12:55 PM
Since varhosting.net seems to be circling the bowl, I now find myself looking for a budget reseller account to handle a few personal websites and to provide hosting for friends/family. Nothing fancy, all small, low-bandwidth sites. I would need the following features: Cpanel, WHM PHP (4 and 5 would be nice), MySQL, Perl, CGI Fantastico Personal name servers 2GB storage 5+GB bandwidth I'm in the US, and would like to keep the price under $200/year. $10/month would be great, but I can pay more for better reliability. As all the sites I'd host would be low-traffic sites, I'm not all that interested in gobs of bandwidth, etc... Possible contenders: ResellerZoom's budget reseller plans Surpass Hosting Site5 BudgetReseller.com So far, I'm leaning towards ResellerZoom's budget reseller plan. Any comments on these hosting companies? Any other ones I should put on my short-list? thanks!

did you left them of still your website runing with them ?

The one's you listed are all good contenders. The only thing I would advise you on would be to select one who's been around a while (4+ yrs). You've already been burned by an unstable company, look for stability and reliability over price this time around.

You may want to do a search for site5.. The more recent reviews are more or less all negative... The other companies look good

Still there, for now. But, I'm coming up on 3 weeks of downtime, so it is time for me to move on...

That is absolutely ridiculous. I would look for a new host immediately. Go with someone who has a great track record. I'd check out network redux.

Three weeks of downtime is a long time. Did you use their instructions to migrate if its an emergency? They have a code you send to support if you require emergency migration give it a shot and see what happens.

I would say take Site5 and Surpass Hosting off the list, huge overselling companies. Do a search for reviews on them You can search for more companies at www.hostsearch.com Last edited by WireNine; 11-29-2006 at 03:52 PM.

I've begun the process to jump ship to ResellerZoom. Their features and support seem most inline with my budget and expectations. At this point, as long as ResellerZoom can keep the downtime to less than 3 week stretches, I figure I'm ahead of where I'm at today

Here's a guy that helped ME out REAL well: a2b2.com Both UK and USA based options, not sure about US but I think he does that too. bye bye: Time: Tue Nov 28 10:11:49 EST 2006 Total Time on Error: 1 week, 5 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes, 49 seconds and no support or timed notifications whatsoever Total Time on Error: 1 week, 5 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes, 49 seconds Total Time on Error: 1 week, 5 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes, 49 seconds Total Time on Error: 1 week, 5 days, 5 hours, 33 minutes, 49 seconds AND COUNTING IF I HAD BEEN MORE PATIENT.............. I feel like a stupid imbicile to have been that slow... BTW, I haven't left VAR yet... I pay my bills and took another plan to solve my problems first, also I'm not interested in hosting as a business really, but communication though, I love it! Isn't it bloody interesting? Somebody should start a thread about whadooyoodoo when your provider gets involved in a change of ownership and migration of all clientele to a different kind of hardware/location or whatever and all of a sudden you find yourself up in 'hope about a better future'... we will hear so with time maybe... I DO have hope Rick will get out with somekinda truth and explain the issue to the disappointed small fish like me What do I think? Couple of hundred customers, thousands of domains, who do you help out first and stuff and how are the kids doing at school and how much sleep did YOU get lately? But remember: A2B2.com if you want support now, that is euro times of day that I have experienced. and BTW as I've been reading elsewhere on the forum I'm not an English mothertongue either

Thanks for the suggestions. Sort of a crappy way for things to end, but you gotta do what you gotta do... Can any remaining varhosting.net customers log into WHM any more? I usually use https://secure.varhosting.net/lpanel/, which still logs me in, but the links to cpanel and whm are broken and I'm no longer able to access either. I'm hoping to pull some back ups off of varhosting before DNS propagates to my new host.

You can use the IP (if you know it) http://ip:2082 (for cPanel) and http://ip:2086 (for WHM)

Another vote for a2b2.com, very professional guys with excellent support. Moved over to them from var last week and I'm very glad I did.

I left var and went with webkore.net. So far so good and I am pleased. They have end user support and set it for me right away.

Sorry, but I do not agree with this statement. As with resellers of dedicated servers.. Alot of hosts can provide you with better service and better response times with lower overhead.. I ran a hosting company a few years back and only had 24 clients.. Charged them an affordable rate for them, and enough for me to still pay the server off, though eventually had to close the company due to rising medical bills in the tens of thousands, gave them 2 months notice and free hosting to move. After I got back to where I was even on the bills again, I started playing around with servers once more.. And 2 months later, I've gotten emails from 15 of those 24 clients who saw I had my personal site back up, and wanted to move back with me.. Because I had the time to explain things to them and help them understand things.. Something these conglomerate 'you ain't status until you have x,xxx number of clients' based hosting companies didn't have the availability to do. Due to staff/client personal time limits. Sometimes the new boys on the block are NOT bad. You just have to be a good judge of character and have a good head on your shoulders to know whether you're getting a good deal and the company is getting a good enough return to stay in business to know if things will stay the same or not. Just for an example.

Before the varhosting fiasco I would have agreed with you completely, but now that I've been burned by var I would not go with a company unless its been in business a minimum of three years. That may not guarantee the same situation with var won't happen as company owners like to sell the business and make a fast buck, but I would have peace of mind knowing they have survived for three years.

Posted by VPSHelp, 11-30-2006, 05:50 PM
You completely missed what I said then.. "to know whether you're getting a good deal and the company is getting a good enough return to stay in business" VARHosting was overselling and charging a low fee. They're relying on loading the server up to max capacity to make a buck in profit. Support slipped. And the owner went AWOL for an extended period of time.. VAR's had these kind of problems since they began anyhow.

Let us know how you like it in a couple months. Glad you found something

Consider ResellerZoom. Don't go with Site5, there are lately negative reviews included longest thread. Glad you all have found great host, better settled than var. Jen
