Does A Customer Ever Need To Login To Plesk

Posted by tomyknoker, 11-25-2006, 09:22 PM
Hi All, If I start a reseller account and purchase MB, would my customers ever need to login into Plesk? If MediaTemple give me there own account center to manage the server do I even need to set up Plesk?

yes you would still login to plesk to control the domain name.

which plan are you using with mediatemple?

Just the (dv) Base, althought 4GB seems like nothing unfortunately... What do you think?

the DV is a fancy term for a VPS, just get a regular reseller, you'll probably get better performance, too.

So you think MediaTemple is overselling a bit? Any companies you'd recommend?

Not a bit, but a lot , however, that doesn't make them bad. Based on the reviews on this forum, they are passing a bad time recently since the introduction of their grid

Yea I know things aren't going too well over there I think... Are there any servers that you'd recommend?

Posted by Jedito, 11-26-2006, 07:38 PM
Sorry, I don't know what are your hosting needs hardly can recommend anyone.

A linux box, 2000GB of data transfer and about 60GB disk space... I have about $60 a month to spend...

I don't know any VDS or Dedicated Providers that could give you those specs for that price. Good luck with that.

Up your budget to about $189, and go with softlayer.

jhservers.com? (dedi)

It's the bandwidth that will eat away your cash. You could find 60GB for $60, but don't expect more than 500GB of bandwidth. These people have excellent support, and this certain server is pretty inexpensive, but there's no panel: http://rackmounted.com/celerond.php

They seem great! What do you think of this configuration: I have a couple of questions, it gives me 8 IP Addresses, can I put all my customers onto the 1 IP address? What would I use the other 7 for? I added Plesk as the ControlPanel does this mean my customers will also have Plesk? Or do I need to purchase licenses?

Posted by GamePhreak, 11-28-2006, 10:28 PM
You'll need at least two if you plan on using nameservers, and you can put all of your customers on one of the IPs you're using for nameservers, so really you only need 2. The other 6 are for dedicated IPs, if one of your customer happens to want one. I charge extra for them to make up for the cost of adding IPs if I surpass 8 on one server. All of your customers will have Plesk. I believe they have Unlimited Domain Plesk licenses, so that'll be all you need.

This seems great! Thanks for the heads up, so basically with one of the packages I could offer shared hosting to customers? Is it often that you get your own IP when signing up for hosting do you know?

Posted by GamePhreak, 11-28-2006, 10:40 PM
Yes, you can offer shared hosting to people with a server and Plesk. You'll also want some knowledge of running a server, though, before getting into anything serious with it, or you could wind yourself up into a lot of trouble. Some customers like the privacy and protection that a dedicated IP offers, so I make that service available to them. Also, if anybody that is reselling underneath you wants their own nameservers, they will need 2 IPs. Most customers don't know what a dedicated IP is, or don't see the use for one, however.

I have a bit of experience, but now a huge amount. I have a few friends/customers which I was going to test it all on first. I'm a quick learner and problem solver and with the server's support I was hoping to be able to do it... Do you think it's an impossible task?

Posted by GamePhreak, 11-28-2006, 10:48 PM
No, but start with family and friends, and if you're just starting in the industry, stick with that for a long time. Then install a billing software and start charging small fees for small hosting. It would be best if you kept yourself to a few paying customers at most to see what that's like. Then eventually move on...

Well I've started with MediaTemple's GridServer, right now I have about 12 clients. I was going to order from rackmounted and slowly bring each client over... I thought from that I'd learn the ups and downs, thing that could go wrong. If I kill something I'll switch whichever client I stuff up back to (mt). What do you think?
