Who Has Reliable Reselling Plans

Wanted to know who other people are using for reselling plans...

If you do a quick browse through this reseller forum, you will see quite a bit of talk about hosts that are recommended and on the contrary, hosts that you should definitely keep your business away from. A few hosts that have been talked about recently that come to mind are HostGator and ResellerZoom (specifically their new failover system). Of course, many other hosts have also been discussed, but listing them all would take quite a while (which is why I recommend taking a quick browse). I have not used these hosts, so I can not comment on the integrity of the services, but I can say that many people are happy with the services that they provide (but like virtually any host, they will all have some bad feedback).

There are tons of reliable reseller hosts on the market today. What sort of features are you looking for and what sort of budget do you have? This information will help us to narrow down your search

Well I was looking at this http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/pricing.htm and was just going to start out with the basic package $49.95 although 4GB doesn't really seem like much...

MediaTemple has been coming out with some new services... although you may want to think twice before choosing a 'grid' system, which I believe (mt) offers. There have been a few posts here about the troubles that their new system has caused and the flaws in it (since it is fairly new for them to offer). Just do a quick search for mediatemple here @ WHT and you'll be sure to find a few recent reviews about their "new" services.

I've heard a number of mixed reviews about media temple, take a look for yourself and see what you think: http://webhostingtalk.com/search.php?searchid=1743993

Oh yea I wouldn't use there Grid as it's not really set up to do reselling, but I was thinking of the (dv) it's quite costly though, have you seen any better deals?

Ah, my mistake, I'm not really familiar with their services Just so I can understand what you are looking for better (for myself, and others), you are looking for a basic reseller account, or do you want more control/CPU limits (such that a VPS offers, or MT's (dv) services -- I believe they offer this kind of control)? If you simply want a reseller account with reselling functionality, I would say that (mt)'s (dv) service would be overkill, and that a more traditional reseller account would be the way to go, although if you do need the extra control, (mt)'s (dv) service may work well for you (although I'm not sure about the reliability for this service, as I have not read anything about it recently), or something like a VPS may be able to offer this control. Please clarify

Well I do want to have some freedom, I am going to install the following software components onto it. ModernBill, Plesk and @Mail. So I guess if I could do all this on a reseller account I wouldn't mind... Would I get more support from the hosting provider on a reseller account? As they still have a fair bit of control over the server unlike a VPS?

Posted by BrettB, 11-28-2006, 12:17 AM
Okay, ModernBill should work on any host (reseller/mt/vps) as long as they offer the correct version(s) of PHP, mySQL, etc... as it is a server-side script which does not require root access. In order to install a full control panel, such as Plesk, it requires either (a) the reseller host to offer it, or (b) root access (available with mt and/or VPSs) that allows you to install your control panel of choice. I'm not familiar with how @mail installs, so it may or may not require root access to install (and depending on this, it may or may not be able to be installed on a reseller account). Generally speaking, reseller accounts do offer more techincal support for their clients, but depending on the provider of the reseller host and the provider of the VPS host, it can vary. Additionally, many VPS's are only "semi-managed" or "self-managed" where you have to do most of the management work, in which case the host would offer little or no support for technical issues outside of hardware, etc..
